Biography

ERIC GELFAND, now in his eighth season with the New York Jets, is the team's senior vice president, communications and content. He has nearly 30 years of experience as a brand strategist for some of the most notable sports, media and entertainment properties. Gelfand is responsible for the strategic development and execution of all team communication strategies, oversees the marketing brand and advertising strategies, its digital, social and broadcast platforms and relationships, as well as the organization's multi-faceted community relations programs.

During his tenure in the organization, Gelfand has synergistically aligned the four departments (communications, marketing, content, and community relations) to maximize their effectiveness, while simultaneously implementing key new initiatives that have helped to increase the team's profile, both on and off-the-field, and led to industry recognition and multiple awards, including 80 Emmy nominations and 43 from other organizations such as Cynopsis, Communicator and ESPN.

Gelfand serves as the club's primary contact and spokesperson for the team's communications efforts for both football and business operations. He is responsible for the local, national, and international media strategy for the organization, working closely with Team Ownership, President Hymie Elhai, General Manager Joe Douglas, and Head Coach Robert Saleh, as well as the club's key executives and players to unify messaging and problem solving.

In 2023, he oversaw the launch of 1JD Entertainment – a trailblazing content, production and brand division designed to use authentic storytelling, world-class production, and innovative promotion to connect the team, fans and partners.

He has also spearheaded the award-winning content department's expansion and focus of episodic franchises across its social and digital platforms through the creation of new, signature series, such as the 10-time Emmy Award-winning One Jets Drive and its off-season spinoff, "Flight." He led the organization's shift to a social-first mindset, which has led to increases in engagement (+75%), impressions (+113%), followers (+188%) and revenue across all platforms in 2022. In addition, the organization has also seen digital increases of page views (+26%), content– articles, videos and galleries – views (+39%) and live programming (+33%). In 2022 alone, the Jets' Influencer Program had the potential reach of 100 million.

Over the last three years, Gelfand helped guide the creation of the Jets and Nike Girl's Flag Football League in 2021 and the expansion of the league through 2023 from 8 to 120 teams spanning New Jersey and Long Island, as well as 12 teams in the United Kingdom. This program gained numerous nominations and awards, including its recent ESPY nomination for a 2023 Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year Award and won the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award from Cynopsis.  Through the organization's community relations department, Gelfand oversees the Jets Foundation which looks to positively influence the lives of young men and women in the tri-state area by supporting youth football and promoting social justice, particularly in disadvantaged communities, while also directing the team's Social Justice, Diversity and Inclusion team.

Prior to joining the Jets, Gelfand was the senior vice president of communications and brand strategy for Legends, the venue-solution company co-owned by the New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys. While there, he was responsible for the development and execution of Legends' communications, public relations, brand strategy and creative services across all the company's divisions. Prior to joining Legends, he served as the senior vice president, communications for SCP Worldwide, where he was responsible for the strategic media positioning and branding for its holdings, including the St. Louis Blues and Real Salt Lake, while also serving as the primary spokesperson for the company. Gelfand's career includes 12 years at Madison Square Garden in a variety of departments as vice president, public relations, including MSG Networks, Corporate Communications and Sports Properties, where he played a key role in the development and growth of the company's media assets, as well as its college basketball and boxing franchises. Gelfand holds a BA in political science from the University of Delaware.
