Biography
Joining the New York Jets as the team's passing game coordinator in February 2026, Ryan is now the third generation of the Ryan Family to coach with the Jets, joining his grandfather, Buddy, and father, Rex. Now in his 10th season coaching in the league, Ryan has served in various positions with the Los Angeles Chargers (2017-20) and Detroit Lions (2021-25).
In five seasons with Detroit (2021-25), Ryan began as the assistant wide receivers coach (2021-24), before one season as assistant tight ends coach (2025). Throughout his time in Detroit, the Lions registered their winningest five-year stretch in franchise history, generating 376.0 yards per game in that span, the second most in the league.
In his final season as the assistant wide receivers coach (2024), Ryan was part of an offensive staff that led the number-two ranked total offense (409.5), averaging a league-high 32.4 points per game, the most by any team in a season since 2018. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown earned his second consecutive first-team All-Pro honor, posting top five ranks in all receiving categories, including receptions, touchdowns, and receiving yards. Ryan also helped wide receiver Jameson Williams notch his first 1,000-yard season, posting the second-highest yards per catch mark in the league (17.3).
In 2023, Detroit advanced to the second Conference Championship game in franchise history-and first since 1991–clinching its first division title in over 30 years. St. Brown hauled in a career high 119 receptions, tied for the second most in the league and the third most in franchise history.
Ryan got his start in the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers (2017-20), where he began as a coaching intern (2017-18) before being elevated to an offensive quality control coach (2019-20). In two seasons as an offensive quality control coach, Ryan helped the Chargers generate a top-10 total offense in consecutive seasons, also generating one of the best third-down conversion rates in the league both years. Quarterback Justin Herbert broke the NFL rookie record for passing touchdowns (31) and completions (396), in addition to throwing for the second-most yards by a rookie since the merger (4,336).
Ryan played wide receiver at Clemson for four seasons during one of the most dominant stretches in school history, which featured a National Championship (2016), two ACC titles (2015, 2016), and wins at the Orange Bowl (2013, 2015), Russell Athletic Bowl (2014), and the Fiesta Bowl (2016). The Tigers went 49-7 during Ryan's playing career, culminating in consecutive appearances in the National Championship and back-to-back one loss seasons.
Ryan, a Summit, NJ native, is married to his wife, Meg. His grandfather, Buddy Ryan, was the defensive line coach for the 1968 New York Jets that won Super Bowl III, and the defensive coordinator for the 1985 Chicago Bears team that won Super Bowl XX. His father, Rex Ryan, was the head coach for the Jets during back-to-back AFC Championship Game appearances. His uncle, Rob Ryan, was an NFL coach for over 20 seasons, winning multiple Super Bowls as a coach.
