Biography

CHRIS BANJO begins his first season with the Jets as the special teams coordinator, having joined Aaron Glenn's staff in February. A 10-year NFL veteran, Banjo most recently served as a special teams assistant for the Denver Broncos (2023-24).

Last season (2024), Banjo helped Broncos returner Marvin Mims Jr. lead the League in yards per punt return (15.7), earning First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors. Additionally, under Banjo's lead, kicker Will Lutz recorded the fourth-best field goal percentage (91.2%) in the NFL, among kickers with at least 30 attempts. As a unit, Banjo helped his group finish again near the top of the League in multiple special teams categories last season, including field goal percentage (sixth – 91.2%), yards per punt return (first – 15.7), and opponent yards per punt return (10th – 8.7). In his first season with the Broncos (2023), Banjo's special teams unit ranked at the top in multiple categories, including punt return average (first- 16.3), punt return average against (second- 6.3), kickoff return average (eighth- 24.9), and kickoff return average against (ninth- 21.5). Prior to beginning his coaching career, Banjo played 10 seasons in the NFL (2013-22), spending time with Green Bay (2013-16), New Orleans (2016-18), and Arizona (2019-22). Banjo entered the League as an undrafted free agent with Jacksonville in 2013. Throughout his career, Banjo appeared in 131 regular season games (seven starts), totaling 85 tackles (59 solo), three interceptions, eight passes defensed, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and 58 special teams tackles (49 solo).

During the 2020 season, Banjo set career highs in games played (13) and tackles (47), while logging 610 snaps on defense and special teams that season for Arizona. While in New Orleans (2017-18), Banjo was part of a team that won consecutive NFC South Division titles and advanced to the NFC Championship game in 2018. Banjo was a key contributor on special teams, recording 13 tackles (12 solo) in the two-year span.

A graduate of Southern Methodist, Banjo appeared in 51 games (47 starts) for the Mustangs (2008-11), totaling 321 tackles (195 solo), four interceptions, 17 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. He earned second team All-Conference USA honors as a junior (2010) and was an honorable mention All-Conference USA following his senior season. A native of Houston, TX, Banjo and his wife, Jasmine, have two sons, Christopher Jr. and Cairo, and one daughter, Celine.
