Biography
BRANDON BLANEY joins the New York Jets as an offensive assistant with 29-years of coaching experience in college and the NFL, having coached in the League previously with Jacksonville and Tennessee. He won two national championships at the collegiate level with Youngstown State, his alma mater, and Oklahoma.
Blaney most recently served as an offensive quality control coach at Central Michigan. He was promoted to senior offensive analyst/ assistant to the head coach prior to joining the Jets.
Prior to Central Michigan, Blaney spent four seasons as the co-run game coordinator/tight ends coach at Eastern Michigan, culminating in a 24-21 record. In 2022, the team rushed for 1,830 yards and a league-best 25 touchdowns en route to their second bowl victory in program history and first since 1987. Before his time at Eastern Michigan, Blaney served as the senior offensive analyst/offensive line coach at Michigan for two seasons (2018-20) under head coach Jim Harbaugh. In 2018, he served on staff with Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, then an offensive analyst at Michigan. Blaney helped Michigan achieve a 19-7 record across two seasons, finishing in the AP top 25 both years and reaching a New Year's Six Bowl Game in 2018.
In 2016, Blaney joined the Tennessee Titans as a defensive assistant. He served on staff for two seasons, helping the team to a winning record both years and, in 2017, their first playoff victory since 2003. The Titans held opponents to 88.3 (2016) and 88.8 (2017) rushing yards per game, the second and fourth lowest marks in the League respectively. Blaney helped the defense produce 40.0+ sacks in back-to-back seasons, one of only two teams in the League to do so.
Prior to his second stint in the NFL, Blaney spent two seasons at Iowa State as the offensive line coach (2014-15). He helped offensive lineman Tom Farniok and Jacob Gannon achieve All-Big 12 honorable mentions in 2014 and offensive lineman Jamison Lalk achieve second team All-Big 12 honors in 2015.
Blaney got his start in the NFL in 2011 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, spending the first season as a defensive quality control coach before being promoted to defensive assistant for his final two seasons (2012- 13). In his first season in the NFL, Blaney was part of a defensive staff that finished sixth in the League in total defense, holding opponents to 313 yards per game, the lowest mark for the franchise since 2006.
He received his first full-time role with Kansas, serving as a recruiting coordinator, tight ends coach, and assistant offensive line coach throughout his eight seasons with the school (2002-09). With Blaney's assistance, Kansas turned around their football program, finishing with a .500 record or better in four of his eight seasons. Prior to that stretch, Kansas had not finished .500 or better since 1995, and only three times in the previous 20 years. In 2007, Kansas finished 12- 1, their best record in program history, and averaged 42.8 points per game, the second highest mark in the country.
Blaney worked as a student assistant at Youngstown State, his alma mater, before moving on to Oklahoma and Ohio State as a graduate assistant. He won the NCAA Division 1-AA National Championship in 1997 with Youngstown State, and the 2000 BCS National Championship with Oklahoma.
A native of Lamar, Mo., Blaney graduated from Youngstown State in 1999 with a degree in education.
He and his wife, Sarah, have two sons, Max and Rex.
