Biography
Alfredo Roberts enters his first season with the New York Jets as the team's tight ends coach, following five seasons with Pittsburgh (2021–25). A two-time National Champion and two-time Super Bowl champion, Roberts brings over 20 years of coaching experience in the NFL, following a six-year playing career with Kansas City (1988–90) and Dallas (1991–93).
In his final season with the Steelers (2025), Roberts led a tight end room that ranked second in the NFL in yards after catch (668), third in receptions (113) and fifth in receiving yards (1,093). He guided three tight ends in Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington, and Jonnu Smith to 200+ receiving yards each, joining the Rams as the only teams with at least three tight ends to do so.
Roberts played a pivotal role in Freiermuth's development throughout his tenure in Pittsburgh, as he became the franchise leader in receptions (220) and receiving yards (2,190) by a tight end over their first four seasons. In 2024, Freiermuth notched career-highs in all categories, totaling 653 yards, while leading the team in receptions (65) and touchdowns (seven). His 65 receptions ranked top 10 among all tight ends in the league, while his seven touchdowns were tied for the fourth-most.
Before Pittsburgh, Roberts spent four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers (2017-20), starting out as the team's running backs coach (2017-19) before transitioning to tight ends (2020). In his lone season coaching the tight ends, Roberts guided Hunter Henry to establish a career high 60 receptions, posting his second consecutive 600+ yard season for the first time in his career.
Roberts' three-year stint as the Chargers' running backs coach marked his only time in the league working with a position group outside of tight ends. During that three-year stretch, he led one of the most productive units in football, with Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler combining for 6,911 scrimmage yards, the second-most by any running back tandem in the league, with both ranking among the top 15 at the position.
Prior to Los Angeles, Roberts spent one season coaching tight ends at Carmel (IND) High School (2016) after four seasons in the same role with the Indianapolis Colts (2012–15). The Colts won 41 games during that span, the seventh most in the league, reaching the postseason three straight times and winning the AFC South twice. In 2014, he led tight ends Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener to become the first pair of tight ends in NFL history to haul in eight or more touchdowns each.
Roberts got his start in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-06), Cleveland Browns (2007-08), where he coached Steve Heiden, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2009-11). His first coaching job came at the collegiate level with Florida Atlantic (1999-02), where he coached tight ends and wide receivers.
A six-year NFL veteran tight end, Roberts was selected by the Chiefs in the eighth round of the 1988 NFL Draft. He spent his first three seasons in Kansas City (1988–90) before joining Dallas (1991-93), where he won back-to-back Super Bowls in his final two seasons with the Cowboys. He appeared in every game for five straight seasons, totaling 450 yards and two touchdowns on 48 receptions, before retiring due to injury.
A native of Hollywood, FL, Roberts graduated from Miami in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He was a member of two National Championship teams at Miami, including the first in school history (1983).
Roberts and his wife, Angel, have twin sons, Avery and Austin, and a daughter, Alyssa.
