Scouting Report: Cornerbacks

Justin Miller

Miller is extremely fast and has the ability to change direction quickly and smoothly. He plays with great confidence for a young player and will use his athletic ability to make plays on the ball. Miller is an excellent return man and is always a threat to score with the ball in his hands. With more experience scouts feel that he can develop into a top flight NFL cornerback.

David Barrett

Though not blessed with great physical tools, Barrett has developed into an NFL starter by playing smart football and using good, sound fundamentals. He is very efficient, very disciplined in his play, and won't make mental mistakes that will hurt the team. He is very good in short area situations and is at his best when moving forward. He is aggressive in run support and steady in coverage.

Andre Dyson

An outstanding athlete, Dyson brings a great deal of speed, quickness, and agility to the Jets secondary. He is a smooth, fluid player who moves easily around the field and shows good instincts and awareness in coverage. Though he lacks ideal size, his speed and range make Dyson a competitive ball hawk. He will push for a starting job with the Jets this year.

Ray Mickens

Mickens is a versatile veteran who still has the athletic ability to overcome his lack of size. He has the quickness and fluid hips to mirror most slot receivers and closes on the ball well. He is a physical hitter who is willing in run support, and though he is at his best in short areas, he still has the speed to turn and run downfield with most receivers.

Drew Coleman

A very good athlete who plays fast and aggressive, Coleman is also smart and shows good instincts. He makes good reads, has good hands, and breaks on the ball well. Is not afraid to go after the ball and consistently makes plays. Coleman has the speed to run with receivers vertically and is a willing tackler in run support, but must show he can overcome his lack of size and bulk at the NFL level.

Derrien Johnson

Johnson is strong in zone coverage and shows a good forward burst when closing on the ball. He has good initial quickness and can change direction easily. Johnson is a willing tackler and cover man but needs to improve his technique.
