Revis Wednesday Conference Call

Transcript of CB Darrelle Revis' conference call with Jets reporters on Wednesday afternoon:

On the possibility of CB Nnamdi Asomugha joining the Jets…

Rex [Ryan] and Mike Tannenbaum are going to do the best thing to build this into a championship-caliber team. Bringing Nnamdi aboard, that's great. He's the best cornerback in the league. Me and him as a tandem would be unbelievable. It'd be awesome, so I would love to have him as a teammate.

On if playing alongside Asomugha is something he has dreamed of…

I don't think it's something that I dreamed about, but on a positive note, anything can happen these days. Everybody wants to team up and better their team. I want to see it. Hopefully it happens, but we also understand that we have a lot of things on the business end. If he comes here he does, if he don't, he's still going to be my same friend that we've always been.

On if he has spoken to or recruited Asomugha…

We always speak as friends. We even spoke about it at the Pro Bowl, about playing on the same team, and now we're here. There's nothing to really talk about furthermore with trying to recruit him, because I try to keep our friendship where it needs to be. He knows where he wants to play and what best fits him, and what he wants to do with his career.

On if he has spoken to Asomugha recently…

I've spoken to him, but I didn't recruit him.

On how he would feel if Asomugha came to the Jets and was given a bigger contract than his…

That's Nnamdi's situation. Money is not the issue here. The issue here with us, is just trying to build a championship-caliber team. Everybody has their own situation. You're seeing guys get signed now. I'm watching NFL Network now. Guys are getting signed. I'm not angry at what anybody gets. That's their situation. You perform on the field to get what you deserve, and Nnamdi is deserving of getting the top dollars, which he has to do. My thing is, I hope we get him.

On if the Jets have approached him to restructure his contract to create more salary cap space…

No, they haven't.

On if he would restructure his contract to help the team sign Asomugha…

I'm going to keep that private with my agents, and let them handle that stuff.

On what the addition of Asomugha would do for the defense…

I don't know. It's going to be sky high. You are going to have teams that have to game plan on to great corners and it is going to be a challenge for offenses for them to throw and plus we have great pass rush as well with some other teammates, Calvin Pace and a lot of blitz packages and it's going to be tough on opposing offenses.

On his reaction to the re-signing of Santonio Holmes…

His signing today, it's great man. It's a celebration for the organization, for his family and it's great man. We know what type of player he is and what he's capable of doing, play in and play out. We congratulate him and are proud of him.

On Asomugha's desire to pursue an acting career…

I don't know. Is he a good actor? I have never seen him act. He never told me anything about that but maybe I will joke a little bit with him about him wanting to be Denzel Washington or Will Smith.

On the feelings of Cromartie coming back if the team is unable to sign Nnamdi…

I don't know. One thing is we all know this is a business. Before Nnamdi we wanted Antonio Cromartie back. We can't leave him out. He has been a part of this team and he knows our defense with the course we are going on right now, and the focus is Nnamdi Asomugha. Whatever that focus is at that time, just like it was Santonio Holmes at the time. That's the focus of what the team would like to do and really focus on.

As of right now, moving forward, there are a lot of things going on in the next couple days. Anything can happen. The focus is David Harris as well and a lot of other things that we need to have, pieces of the puzzle, to make this championship-caliber team this year.

On Randy Moss potentially joining the team…

I don't think we are going to get along [laughing]. I'm just playing. Randy, you respect a guy like that. Me and him both know that sticks and stones may break my bones but words never hurt you. That's just the competition and level of play we try to bring out in each other. That's what it always did.

I don't think it's really too personal. I would love to have him, if we were to go get him. The guy can still play; he can still catch the ball, and is a big fast guy. I am open and guys especially in our locker room they are open to guys coming to help what we are trying to do here and being a New York Jets player and we can add another piece to the puzzle. It's great.

On how important it was for the team to sign Santonio…

I think that was one of their number one priorities, when everything started back up, to get Santonio signed. The guy is, to me, is unbelievable as a receiver with his intelligence and his route running and he is tough. He's a tough sucker. He is a leader. He made a couple of speeches in our locker room last year. You can tell how he has a passion to play football. I think Santonio and Mark's [Sanchez] chemistry is great and you can see it throughout last year. They were quick and had a one-two punch as a quarterback and a receiver tandem.

On if he has spoken to Cromartie and if he had a choice of who he would rather play with…

That's a hard question. No, I haven't. I haven't talked to Cromartie in a while, probably since May. They are both two good corners. They are both great. It's just what management wants to do and what route they want to take in terms of who best fits that spot and where they want to go with it. Nobody is going to have a problem with management or the organization going with Cromartie.

Every year we go through the same thing as players — letting players go and trying to sign new players to fit, to have the right team, to fit the right team, to compete for what we try to compete for that year and it's that Lombardi Trophy. Management is going to do the best job and get the right guys that they want to play that position.

On if the team loses Braylon Edwards and Brad Smith, if they will still be able to perform this season…

Those are two lethal weapons in Braylon and Brad. Like I said before, if Rex and all those guys feel we need to keep them then that's their decision. If not, it's best for the team. It's always been. Everybody's going through the same situations when negotiations come around. I experienced it last year so the question always, is this best for the ball club. Some of these guys are going to do that.

Trust me, I tell them all the time let's keep the same roster. I believe that the guys you spend all the time with, all the years with, you get comfortable with them. It's that nucleus, that unity that you have with those guys. There's a bunch of stuff, the draft and free agency, so it gets kind of hectic, but you want to see everybody not leave. That's how I feel.
