Does the Jets' Bye Week Come at a Good Time?

HC Aaron Glenn: ‘There’s a Good and Bad to It’

The Jets stormed into the bye with a dramatic comeback victory on the road, roaring back from a 31-16 deficit to the Bengals in the fourth quarter to claim a 39-38 win in Cincinnati. With his first win under his belt as Jets' head coach, Aaron Glenn was asked Monday what he thought about the timing of his club's off week.

"I'll be honest, and I'll say, man, I wish we were playing next," Glenn said before adding, "but I do feel like this is a good time for us. Because now, our focus, again as it's always been, it's been on us and some of the things that we just need to clean up. We're going to go back and we're going to self-scout as far as coaches and we're going to talk to the players about things. About the good, bad, the ugly, and the solutions, also, for us moving forward. So, there's a good and a bad to it."

Following their bye, the Jets will play two games in four days. After they host the Cleveland Browns (2-6) on Nov. 9, the Green & White will have a couple of practices to prepare before they head to New England for a Thursday night divisional matchup against the surging Patriots (6-2) on Nov. 13.

"Obviously after you get a win you want to continue going, but I also know that there's some things that we have to reflect on and try to continue to fix," Glenn said. "And understand, man, there's a foundation that we're trying to create and that is an ongoing process, and we feel good about that. Listen, even though the record is not where [we want it] to be – we feel good about the foundation that we're trying to set, so we can be a team that's going to win continuously."

The Jets lost five one-score decisions over the first seven games. Trailing by 24-13 Sunday, Glenn emphasized finishing in the second half. And the Jets flipped the script in the third and fourth quarters, scoring on their final four possessions including 3 TDs and 2 2-point conversions in a memorable 23-point final stanza.

"It speaks volumes of what we talked about going into halftime of -- I don't want to say I challenged the team because we already talked about that before that we're about to see exactly how physically tough we are to be able to be a resilient team, things that we've talked about since OTAs that the game is never over and we can always win the game," Glenn said. "And our guys came out and proved that. And it wasn't just the offense coming out having an explosion like they did. The defense made plays in critical times that we need too, same as the special teams. But I am happy."

Despite yielding 38 points, the Jets' defense ended the game with consecutive stops. Edge Will McDonald IV ended a Cincinnati possession with a third-down sack of QB Joe Flacco and then the defense turned Flacco away on downs after the Bengals reached their 45. This showed the growth of a unit that was unable in Week 3 to prevent QB Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers from getting into field-goal range for a game-winning kick in Tampa's 29-27 win on Sept. 21.

"Man, it seemed like we're in this valley and then we had these peaks when it comes to offense and defense," Glenn said. "I just look forward to the time we can all put it together and play true complementary football and go out and win games that we want to win. But I will say this, we were playing supportive football to where when the offense is not clicking, man, the defense has picked them up. You know, when the defense is not clicking, the offense has picked it up and special teams have just been really good throughout the season. So again, complementary football is something that we strive to do as we go on this season."
