The Jets attempted to bring pressure on Joey Harrington in the fourth quarter, but the Dolphins offense executed well down the stretch while scoring 14 points. The Miami rally fell short when Olindo Mare missed a 51-yard field goal attempt in the final minute.
"We blitzed. We just didn't get there," Mangini said. "At that point we were thinking about a lot of different things. We brought some pressure off the edge, up the middle. They were executing pretty well at that point. We had some missed tackles sprinkled in there. It was a varied approach."

Opening statement
That's just like we drew it up, so I was happy about that. I'm proud of these guys. I'm proud of the way we played offensively and defensively and on special teams. I thought it was a group win. It's important to win at home, it's important to win against a division opponent. Again, being here with the Jets' fans is always great. When games get tight, their energy is helpful. I was really happy with the way the team played. It was up and down and back and forth, and that's the way most Miami-Jets games go.
On WR Laveranues Coles…
He was outstanding again. You see his toughness – his ability to make plays, whether it's short, whether it's deep. Whenever he is called on, he responds. I was happy with that.
On exploiting the Miami secondary in the first half…
We had different plays that we liked – game-plan wise - going into the week. We ran those plays and saw some opportunities. We had some nice throws and Laveranues made some nice catches. I think it was a combination of things.
On the change in personality between the first and second halves…
You see the way it goes. Sometimes you start and it's a defensive struggle, and you end and it's an offensive struggle. I'm excited about the way it finished.
On the defensive play…
I felt, especially in the first half, we caused three turnovers, and that's important. The giveaway/takeaway is so important. Being able to generate those turnovers is going to be key week in and week out to protect the football, and also to be able to disrupt the football.
On blitzing on Miami's scoring drives…
We blitzed. We just didn't get there. At that point we were thinking about a lot of different things. We brought some pressure off the edge, up the middle. They were executing pretty well at that point. We had some missed tackles sprinkled in there. It was a varied approach.
On holding off the late comeback this game…
It's a lot more fun than the other way. I'm pleased with the way everyone contributed. I'm pleased the way it was a group effort. I'm pleased with the way these guys have worked throughout the season. This is something we are going to enjoy here for a little while and get ready to move on to Detroit.
On Miami's adjustment in the fourth quarter…
It shifted to more of a multiple-receiver, no-huddle offense. Usually when it is a two-to-three point difference, a lot of times it becomes a two-minute mode for 10-12 minutes. That's kind of where we were.
On concern that Miami moved the ball fast during their last drive…
There's a lot of things we can do better on those drives. It's something we work on quite a bit. We will continue to work on it. I'm really pleased with the way the final drive ended.
On Miami trying to tie the game…
There are things we can work on, but I am pleased the way the team played in all three phases. That's what I'm focused on. Like every week, we will look at the tape and take away the positives, correct the negatives and move on to the next opponent.
On thoughts during the last field goal attempt…
I've seen a lot of field goal kicks in my career. That was another one of those field goals. Some go through, some don't. That one didn't.
On OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson lining up against DE Jason Taylor…
He did a pretty good job. He's faced some tough pass-rushers here, in this early part of the season. Every week is going to be like that for him. I'm pleased with the way he learns a little bit more with each experience and builds off it, so that's been positive. It's all part of the learning curve.
On the running game…
We were running the ball pretty effectively and it's something we have been working on quite a bit. The defensive run fits – barring a few plays, they were a lot better than they have been. That's what we need to keep doing – improving the overall face of the defense. The secondary fits the defense.
On where the team stands…
I'm pleased with the way these guys have been working. I'm pleased with the way they have been translating that work into execution and into wins. It's something we are going to continue to do – take that same, consistent approach. If we continue to work the way we do, continue to make progress, success will come.
On the team bouncing back from last week's loss…
We moved on from that after we made the corrections. This week we will move on from this game after we make the corrections and take away the things we can. It will be the same every week.
On the effect of last week's loss…
What we are really working towards, is that each game is its own entity. That's the way we are going to approach it. It is 1/16th of the season and we are going to prepare for each game the same way as we did for the last. Whether we win by 40 or lose by 40, win by three or lose by three, it's all going to be the same.
On Coles being one of the top receivers in the NFL…
I'm not exactly sure where he would be statistically. He's been really positive for us, though. He's a go-to guy who makes play after play, game after game. His toughness is a real example for everybody.
On thoughts of Dolphins' last play on fourth down at the end of the game…
Olindo Mare is usually pretty good when he crosses the 50-yard line. He's made a lot of 50-plus field goals and it's a really understandable decision on Coach Saban's part. I respect all of the decisions he makes. He's a really good football coach
