Though HC Aaron Glenn has not revealed who the starting QB for Week 8 will be, veteran Tyrod Taylor has approached this week just like any other.
"Trying to keep it normal," Taylor said of navigating the uncertainty. "… Sticking true to my process. Preparing mentally, physically to be ready for whatever the opportunity at hand is."
Glenn said Wednesday "we will have a quarterback on Sunday," but he did not reveal who the man under center will be -- Taylor or QB Justin Fields. It hardly matters for the preparation of the 15-year veteran, Taylor, who has had his fair share of NFL experience as both a starter and a backup.
"It doesn't necessarily affect me mentally," he said. "The dedication to staying committed to my process, week in and week out since I've been in this league, has prepared me for moments like this."
Taylor began his career as a backup in Baltimore for QB Joe Flacco, whom the Jets will face in Cincinnati on Sunday. He then went on to start 43 games in Buffalo from 2015-17, and he has since started games and served as a backup on 5 other teams, including the Jets. Taylor's only start for the Green & White was in Week 3 when Fields was sidelined with a concussion, but he also took the field in the fourth quarter of Week 2 and in the third quarter of Week 7.
No matter what the circumstances are, Taylor said his "sole focus is being available and ready to be able to lead this team when called upon." If called upon in Week 8, Taylor will be tasked with sparking an offense that has struggled to find a rhythm -- and the end zone -- for two consecutive weeks.
"It starts with me just doing my job," Taylor said. "And asking everyone else on the offense -- all 11 of us -- to execute our job efficiently. We don't have to be more than what it calls for. It's about us executing one play at a time and us being on the same page, believing in one another, believing in the scheme and going out there and playing free."
Though Taylor was able to push the ball down the field in Sunday's loss, throwing for 126 yards in the second half of the game, he threw 2 interceptions.
"It's up to us to go out there and put our eyes in the right place, deliver a good accurate ball," Taylor said. "… The two picks, obviously those hurt teams especially in such a close game. But you learn from them and move forward."
If he takes the field this week, Taylor will look to move forward and help the offense execute at a higher level. But no matter who is under center, the focus remains of finding ways to win.
"Obviously at the quarterback position, no one's more critical than ourselves," he said. "Week in and week out, each game is going to tell its own story. But I guess from a veteran to a younger guy in this league -- continue to stay committed to your process and continue to stay committed to getting better each and every day. Each game is going to look different from a statistical standpoint, but it's really about winning and putting your team in the best situation to win, week in and week out."
