S Minkah Fitzpatrick Ready to 'Be Where My Feet Are' in Return to Home State

Nine-Year Veteran’s Goal: ‘Bring Passion to the Field That’s Contagious’

Fitzpatrick 1

Born in Old Bridge, NJ, S Minkah Fitzpatrick may have never envisioned playing professional football for a team that trains in his home state.

That wasn't, however, because he didn't dream of one day playing in the NFL. It was simply because the 29-year-old has prided himself on living in the moment and maximizing each opportunity as it presents itself.

"I feel like just naturally … I like to be where my feet are," Fitzpatrick said after arriving at 1 Jets Drive. "When I was in high school, thinking about the next step -- I wanted to get to college and play at a high level in college. Then when I got to college, I wanted to play at a high level in the league. So, when I was here [New Jersey], I was just worried about being here. I never worried about if it was actually a possibility to make the next step. I never thought about wearing the green and white."

As luck would have it, though, Fitzpatrick is now fewer than 50 miles from his hometown. The Jets acquired the nine-year veteran in a trade with the Miami Dolphins, made official on March 11.

Fitzpatrick's football career -- which now brings him back to his home state -- has taken him all over the map. After playing high school football at Saint Peter's Prep in Jersey City, he played three collegiate seasons at Alabama and was then selected No. 11 overall by the Dolphins in 2018. In 2019, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers and remained with the team until he was traded back to the Dolphins in 2024.

For someone now set to take the field with his third team in three seasons, living in the moment has been a critical part of achieving success.

"It's an unfortunate part of the business that we do, having to move cities and whatnot," Fitzpatrick said. "I have a young son and a young family. But at the end of the day, I think what we do and the things that we sacrifice are worth it. It makes this work even harder. I don't want to move my son to three different cities in three years to not produce a good result."

Fitzpatrick has produced a fair share of good results throughout his career. A five-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro, he has logged 690 total tackles, 60 PDs and 21 INTs during 120 regular-season games. In 2019, he recorded the longest pick-6 (96 yards) of the NFL season, and in 2022, he led the league with 6 interceptions. Bringing a veteran presence and years of lessons learned in the league, Fitzpatrick hopes to add to his productive career during his first season with the Green & White.

"I would like to bring passion to the field that's contagious," he said. "All great defenses have a secondary that is physical. They play with an attitude or a chip on their shoulder. They're disciplined, they aren't making many mistakes. When other teams are scouting us and planning for us, we're not going to be predictable. But we're also not going to be chaotic. We're going to have a rhyme and a reason to why we do things, why I do things, why I play things a certain way."

Fitzpatrick is now a member of a revamped secondary that includes additions CB Nahshon Wright -- who led the league in takeaways during the 2025 season -- and S Dane Belton, who came across town after four seasons with the Giants.

The roster also features DB Jarvis Brownlee Jr. -- whom the Jets acquired from the Tennessee Titans last season -- S Andre Cisco, who re-signed with the Jets on March 16, and 2025 third and fourth-round draft selections Azareye'h Thomas and Malachi Moore.

The group will benefit from working with HC Aaron Glenn, who will be calling defensive plays in 2026.

"I was excited to play for AG," Fitzpatrick said. "He's a guy who played high-level football in the league, and now he's coaching in the league. And he played defensive back, same position as myself. So, it's exciting to be able to play for a guy who has already done what I've done and he's gone through what I'm going through and can relate to on a lot of different levels."

While Glenn brings a unique understanding of executing at a high level in the defensive backfield, Fitzpatrick stressed that Glenn's focus on building a strong culture is what can truly set the Jets apart in 2026.

"When you look at any good program … it starts at the top," Fitzpatrick said. "It starts with the leader setting the standard. It starts with the leader being the example for everyone else and I think AG does that."

He added: "I think it's really crucial and really important to have that in a head coach, and I'm grateful we have that in AG."
