Jets-Browns Game Preview | With Change Comes Opportunity

Young Players Set to Embrace More Defensive Opportunities; WR Garrett Wilson Will Return to Offense Aiming to Build on Positive Momentum

Game Preview-16x9-w10-vs-browns

In a week of uncertainty and change at 1 Jets Drive, the focus has remained on preparing for the next opponent.

The Jets made several notable moves on trade deadline day, sending CB Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts and DT Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys. But as the Jets (1-7) host the Cleveland Browns (2-6) at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, a new opportunity awaits.

"Those two guys are great players, we all know that," HC Aaron Glenn said Wednesday. "All-Pro players. But the one constant in this league is change. I've said that to all our players -- not just today, but throughout this season -- that this is a fluid game. Listen, players come and go, coaches come and go. But the one thing that I do know -- with change, there comes opportunity."

Winning Sunday: 'That's the Only Focus in This Entire Building Right Now'
After Tuesday's trades, the Jets now hold five first-round draft selections in the next two drafts combined, prompting conversations about the future of the team. For GM Darren Mougey, though, the immediate goals of the team haven't changed.

"The focus is winning Sunday against the Browns," Mougey said Tuesday. "That's the only focus in this entire building right now."

DC Steve Wilks said it will be important "to press and move forward and get ready to play a football game," and part of that process includes other players stepping up. CBs Brandon Stephens and Jarvis Brownlee Jr. Jr., as well as rookies Azareye'h Thomas and Malachi Moore, are among those Wilks said he has "total confidence in" to make key plays. Thomas, who started his first pro game in Week 8, could get the start again on Sunday.

"I saw the toughness, the physicality, the competitive nature," Wilks said of the group. "We can win with that."

The defense will look to capitalize on opportunities against a Browns' offense that has recorded just 263.5 total yards per game, the second fewest in the league. But Wilks pointed to several offensive weapons that the Jets will have to contain, including RB Quinshon Judkins, TE David Njoku and WR Jerry Jeudy.

"Throwing the record out the window," Wilks said of how the team is approaching the matchup. "The Browns are a good football team. … We've got a tough task ahead of us this week and number one, it starts with stopping the run, the one thing that we struggled with the previous game."

Offense 'Excited to Keep Building on What We Have Right Now'
HC Aaron Glenn did not disclose who the starting QB will be in Week 10, Justin Fields or Tyrod Taylor. But if No. 7 takes the field, he will attempt to replicate a Week 8 performance that OC Tanner Engstrand described as "resilient" and "incredible." Fields completed 21-of-32 passes for 244 yards and 1 TD.

No matter who is under center, Engstrand said the offense is "excited to keep building on what we have right now" following a 500-plus net yard showing in Week 8. The unit, though, is going to be challenged by a Cleveland defense that has allowed just 276.9 yards per game, the second fewest in the league.

"This is another tough defense," Engstrand said. "They rank high in a lot of defensive categories, obviously led by No. 95, Myles Garrett, who is an issue in and of himself as we all know. So, we'll have to have a good plan for him."

The O-line, led by young tackles Armand Membou and Olu Fashanu, should factor into that game plan. While the Jets did not allow a single sack in Week 8, for the first time this season, Garrett boasts the second most sacks in the league (11.0) and the most TFL (15).

"When you just take a look at their defense, they're playing at a very high level," Glenn said. "… This is a sound, sound football team that plays very aggressive, so we have to be on our p's and q's when it comes to how we operate on offense."

The Jets should benefit from the return of WR Garrett Wilson, who after missing two games with a knee injury, said he will be good to go on Sunday.

"I feel like it was enlightening for me just to see [the game] from a different point of view and take that time to get my knee back, and now I feel great," he said. "Not to mention I'm just super pumped to be back out there and with my teammates."

And after a week of change and uncertainty, Wilson said it will be important to turn the page ahead of Week 10.

"Just doing your job," he said of moving forward. "Doing what you're asked to do and trying your damn best to do it to the top of your ability to help your teammates out."
