Despite yielding 31 points and 503 yards to the Jaguars in Week 4, linebacker Avery Williamson believes the Jets defense has what it takes to turn their fortune around.
"We have the guys to do it, but we just have to make sure we're locked in on every situation, myself included," Williamson said on Inside the Jets with Eric Allen and Erik Coleman. "We have to make sure we get off the field on third down. The offense has gone through their downfalls at times, but we have to make sure we're getting the ball back to them."
Head coach Todd Bowles said the team isn't as bad as the film shows, but added "we're not as good as some of the things we did either." Entering Week 5, the Green & White is one of three teams in the NFL to force at least 10 turnovers and record at least 10 sacks.
"We have to continue to work with the guys we got and we have some good guys," Williamson said. "We have to come out here this week, have a great week of practice, continue to execute and communicate. We have to make sure we're doing as much extra as possible to get this win. Whatever it takes."
Even though the Jets sit at 1-3 after opening the season 1-0, there is still a lot of football left to be played. The Dolphins sit atop the AFC East at 3-1 after losing to the now 2-2 Patriots and the Green & White and the Bills are both 1-3.
"We have 12 games left. A whole lot can happen," Williamson said. "You can't get too down. After the game, there were a lot of sad faces. Today (Monday) was still kind of upsetting, but it's over with now. All we can do is move on to Denver."
After opening up with three of four on the road, the fifth-year veteran is excited to play football in front of the Green & White faithful for three consecutive weeks.
"I'm excited to get back out there and have another opportunity because that feeling on Monday night was amazing," he said. "We work really hard to get to the season and the opportunity is still there. We have to make sure we're taking advantage of it and doing everything possible. I'm going to make sure I'm going to stay on top of my game."
