When Will RB Matt Forté be Back?

Veteran Back Eager to Work, but Doesn’t Want to Rush His Return

It's safe to say Jets running back Matt Forte is itching to get back on the field.

"For me, it's real tough because I want to be out there especially with our offense out there grinding," Forté said. "A lot of people are telling me that I'm a vet and to take my time off, but I don't like the rest. I like to go out there and prepare for the season. It's tough being in the waiting room doing that stuff. I'm not used to that, but it's something I have to deal with. When I'm 100% and get back out there, I have to work that much harder and work after practice like I always do, but even more so."

The 31-year-old has been sidelined since August 1st with a hamstring injury, something he dealt with last season as well. Even though the injury was sustained in the same leg, it's located in a different part of the hamstring.

Head coach Todd Bowles said he'd err of the side of caution when Forté first tweaked it and Bowles echoed more of the same today after practice.

"He's still day-to-day," he said. "He's doing better and we're bringing him along slowly. He'll do a little more tomorrow."

Forté isn't sure when he'll return, but he feels close. He was running routes during individual drills in today's practice, but said he can't go half-speed with the nature of his position.

"I'm feeling good, but not good enough to be in full practice yet," he said. "I'm going through what the trainers tell me. I'm easing back in. I don't want to go back out there immediately and injure it again. Hamstrings are tricky. I had one last year. I came back out to practice and ended up injuring it, which is why it took multiple weeks. I had to let it heal, so it was something to learn from. This year, I definitely have to let it heal all the way, so I don't have any setbacks."
