The quarterback matchup for today's Jets-Patriots game at MetLife Stadium will be the same one it was at last year's Game 6 in the Meadowlands: McCown vs. Brady.

Josh McCown, as head coach Todd Bowles announced Friday, will get his second start this season in place of rookie Sam Darnold, the starter for the first nine games who's been sidelined with a foot strain and is out for this game.

Brady was expected to start this one all along, but he suffered a knee injury late in New England's 34-10 loss at Tennessee two weeks ago, was listed as limited in the first two practices of the week, and on Friday did not participate in practice and was listed as questionable for the Jets. But Brady is set to roll for his 33rd start against the Jets all-time this afternoon (kickoff set for 1:02 p.m. ET).

Also expected to play today is Brady's dynamic receiving partner, TE Rob Gronkowski, who has sat out three of the previous four games with back and ankle issues. Both Brady and Gronkowski reportedly made the trip from Foxboro, MA, to New Jersey with the team.

Last year at MetLife when the two veterans matched up, McCown's Jets took a 14-0 first-quarter lead but Brady rallied his troops for the 24-17 victory. Despite the loss, McCown completed 31 of 47 passes for 354 yards, his high with the Jets, two TDs and two interceptions.

Two other Jets starters will sit out today's action. S Marcus Maye will miss his fifth game due to injuries this season, this time with shoulder and thumb problems. And G James Carpenter (shoulder) will sit out for the first time after starting in the previous 42 games since coming to the Jets as a free agent for the 2016 season.

But WR Robby Anderson (ankle), who's missed two of the past three games, is active.

The Jets' full inactive list for today's game:

  • QB Sam Darnold
  • WR Deontay Burnett
  • S Marcus Maye
  • CB Derrick Jones
  • LB Jeremiah Attaochu
  • G James Carpenter
  • WR Rishard Matthews

And the Patriots' inactives:

  • DB Duke Dawson
  • DB Nate Ebner
  • DL Keointa Davis
  • OL Mat Tobin
  • OL James Ferentz
  • TE Dwayne Allen
  • DE Derek Rivers

The Jets will be in their green jerseys and green pants for today's game. Not including their kelly green Nike Color Rush uniforms, the Jets will be wearing green/green under Bowles for the fifth time. They won three of the first four in that uni configuration, including the 34-16 success over Denver in Game 5 this year.

First-year referee Shawn Hochuli, son of longtime ref Ed Hochuli, who retired after last season, is refereeing his first Jets game today. Hochuli had been an NFL back judge since 2014 before moving up to referee this season.
