When Jets players reported for training camp at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center on Tuesday, they were greeted with a new state-of-the-art locker room. The renovation features 92 new customized lockers, a new wet area, larger sauna and barbershop.

"The locker room and any every player space has always been important to ownership and management," said Robert Mastroddi, the club's senior vice president of security and facility operations. "We take pride in having a first-class environment for the players. These upgrades will certainly provide more comfort, but they also will help with wellness, efficiency and ultimately performance. There is a commitment to winning and that's where this all derived from."

The reconfigured locker room features 92 full-size lockers made of veneer, melamine and stainless steel. The 1,000-pound lockers, designed by the Texas-based Longhorn Locker Company, are equipped with electronically controlled video screens and three separate fans for shoulder pads, helmets and cleats that will dry the equipment. The forced air ventilation will reduce moisture and lessen the risks of staph infections and MRSA.

"We are the first pro team or NCAA team to implement a fully automated video display into the lockers," Mastroddi said. "We can customize the content on the screens and it's all interchangeable. If there is a change to a schedule or a point that maybe Coach Glenn wants emphasized, that can be easily programmed."

No detail was too small. The Jets designed every locker as if the space was the player's own room at 1JD.

"Players will sit inside the lockers with plush custom seats with the Jets logo embroidered into the back part of the headrest," Mastroddi said. "Each locker has USB outlets for charging. It's got a Sonos system for music throughout the locker room, which the players are really going to love. It's got a sharp green LED strip light underneath the locker. We needed to think about everything from the smallest to the biggest. We made sure we had a large enough cup holder in there that will accommodate their protein shakes if they want to bring it in there."

The Jets swapped in a bigger sauna, replacing a steam room that was rarely used.

"We want our players to stay healthy and recover faster," Mastroddi said. "If there is anything we can do to ensure wellness and maintain/improve performance, we're going to do it."

From an aesthetic standpoint, the locker room ceiling and hallways were also transformed.

"There is a 230-square foot ceiling Jets logo that weighs approximately 2,000 pounds," Mastroddi said. "It's a three-dimensional logo with over 500 lights along the entire ceiling and it's backlit and frontlit. The hallway has this black textured wallpaper with green LEDs running through the entire hallway down to the end and out toward the indoor fieldhouse with two separate logos. One is just the NY logo that's lit up, and the other one is the Jets primary logo that's lit up."

Many players likely will light up when they see the Jets barbershop. The organization acquired two vintage black barber chairs from the 1950s and completely customized to their liking with green stitching to their backs and seat rests.

"We didn't have a permanent spot for players to get their haircuts," Mastroddi said. "It's a nice bonus for guys. We care about their time and it's something they won't have to worry about handling outside the complex."

Although the locker room's transformation and facility upgrade had been years in the making, the Jets' timeline was five weeks between player departure from mandatory minicamp in June and then their return Tuesday.

"This was a major construction project with a tight deadline," Mastroddi said. "So proud of the team. Because, as you know, nothing gets done by one individual and multiple departments including facilities, equipment, marketing, IT and content played critical roles. Woody [Chairman Woody Johnson] and Christopher [Vice Chairman Christopher Johnson], who had this facility built in 2008, have always been committed to provide a home for players that is second to none. That standard will never change."
