In Indianapolis for the annual NFL Scouting Combine and speaking to reporters for the first time since the end to the Jets' 2025 season, GM Darren Mougey said on Wednesday that "Justin Fields under contract."
But Mougey also indicated that the team has options at every position -- in free agency and the NFL Draft.
With a new offensive coordinator, Frank Reich, added to HC Aaron Glenn's reconstituted coaching staff, Mougey stressed the importance of getting it right, especially at quarterback.
"We're having discussions about the quarterback position every day," Mougey said. "I was actually talking to Frank this morning, and it's myself, AG, Frank, [QB coach] Billy [Musgrave], and just discussions about all the different options and the opportunities we may or may not have. But for the time being, Justin's in all of those conversations. So, we'll see where that goes as we go through the process."
Holding two selections in the first round of April's draft, Nos. 2 and 16, (and two more in the second round) and with Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza expected to be the No. 1 overall pick by Las Vegas, the Jets are mulling myriad options: draft players like Alabama's Ty Simpson or LSU's Garrett Nussmeier or dip into the free-agent market, or work out a trade.
"Justin's on the roster, and just like every other position, we're going to evaluate the quarterback position through every landscape, whether that's trade, on-the-street free agency to see what we can add to the team," Mougey said. "But Justin's under contract. Glad he's under contract. We have no trigger date with Justin's contract, so he's part of the Jets." He added: "He's on the roster and he wants the opportunity."
Fields was signed in free agency to a two-year contract after one season in Pittsburgh. He started 9 games this past season and had a 2-7 record before being replaced first by veteran Tyrod Taylor (who is set to be a free agent) and then undrafted free agent Brady Cook, who was winless as the starter over the final four games of the season. Any decision about Fields' future with the Green & White carries myriad and complex salary cap implications.
The Jets have ample space under the salary cap to pursue a free agent, estimates vary but put the team with the fourth-most money to spend.
"We're working through that process," Mougey said, referring to free agency. "We'll evaluate, we'll stay in contact with those guys, monitor them throughout the free-agency process. And just go through the free agency process and see where that lands."
Some of the players who could be available include the veteran Kirk Cousins, Malik Wilkins, former Giants QB Daniel Jones and Marcus Mariota. Pursuing a trade is also a possibility.
"I do feel there's some good options out there," Mougey said.
Asked if the decision to sign Fields in free agency last year might deter the Jets from going that route again, Mougey said: "That doesn't mean we won't do it again. We'll always we're learning throughout these processes, and again, the dialog and the conversations are ongoing."
Mougey acknowledged that the fit between player and offensive coordinator Frank Reich will, in part, drive whatever decision the Jets make.
"I think that conversation of fit is definitely important with the quarterback position, really with every position, but specifically the quarterback position," he said. "The fit with the team, the current situation, the fit with the play caller, is important. So, we look at all those things and we have those discussions."
