The Jets announced today that they have hired Dennard Wilson to be the club's DB coach.
A member of the Rams coaching staff the past five seasons, Wilson served as the team's defensive backs coach in 2015-16. The Rams finished No. 10 in pass defense in 2016, yielding 233.2 yards per game. They also limited the big play, finishing both T5 in terms of 20-plus yard completions (41) and 40-plus yard completions (6) allowed. Before being promoted to DB coach, Wilson was the team's defensive quality control coach from 2012-14. A scout with the Bears from 2008-11, Wilson evaluated pro players and was responsible for scouting the team's opponents.
Wilson played both cornerback and safety at Maryland from 2000-03, appearing in 42 games and making 30 starts. He totaled 158 tackles and was an honorable All-ACC pick as a senior after leading the Terrapins with 12 PDs. An undrafted free agent, Wilson signed with the Washington Redskins in 2004 and spent time on their practice squad before suffering a season-ending injury. The Upper Marlboro, MD native attended DeMatha HS and spent three seasons there as defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator from 2004-06 before returning to Maryland as a graduate assistant in 2007-08.
