Morris Claiborne has been having a quietly solid Jets training camp. The former Dallas Cowboys first-round pick opened the first practice with a bang (and two picks), and since then the corner's been going about his business learning Todd Bowles' and Kacy Rodgers' defensive scheme and getting ready for his fresh start in green and white.
One of Claiborne's biggest contributions so far has been his sense of professionalism and leadership for a secondary, a defense and a team in need of all of that after losing so many years of experience from the roster early in the offseason.
He talked briefly with the team's reporters after today's practice at the Atlantic Health Training Center (when he made a diving PD of a Christian Hackenberg pass for ArDarius Stewart) and his comments about his teammates were all positive and nurturing as the Jets got one day closer to making their 2017 preseason debut Saturday night against the Titans:
On his closeness with fellow LSU product Jamal Adams..."Everybody who's been through LSU, you're family. One of my godbrothers, they're very close. Jamal comes to Dallas and they chill and usually I'm around as well, so we all know a lot about each other.
On if he's impressed with how Adams and Marcus Maye have taken hold of the safety positions..."On, definitely, just seeing the way those two guys came in and put the burden on their back, so to speak, and just go, learn the defense, making checks and different calls. But most of all, going out there and playing with the confidence that they're playing with and having fun with it, that's one of the most important things."
On how helpful Buster Skrine and all the holdover Jets have been in his transition..."Buster, Marcus, all the guys in the room. It's not just one person, it's the entire room pitching in. If I don't understand something, I'll ask one of those guys and they don't hesitate to fill me in on where I need to be or how I need to play a certain formation."
On what he's seen in second-year CB Juston Burris..."He's developing great. Seeing him this year from when I first got here till now, he's one of those guys, he's got the skillset to play and be a great NFL cornerback. It's just one of those things of keeping your confidence. I can tell you a lot about how much confidence plays a part in that corner position."
On what he and his new team see as the goal for Saturday's preseason opener..."We need to get some good snaps. I don't know what the time is of guys playing, but whoever's playing, first team, second team third team, we're looking to get some good quality snaps, put some good stuff on film. And we're going into the game to win."
