Examining the State of the Green & White Offensive Line Heading into the 2015 Season

A six-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro, Nick Mangold is coming off one of his finest professional seasons. Pro Football Focus ranked the Jets center No. 32 on its list of Top 101 list of 2014, saying, "An excellent run blocker it was his pass blocking that pushed him over the edge, where he allowed only seven hurries all year."

D'Brickashaw Ferguson, a Virginia product who was selected No. 4 overall in the 2006 NFL Draft, has started every game he has appeared in (151 including postseason) and has missed just one snap over his first eight professional seasons. The 6'6", 310-pounder, who consistently lines up across from the opposition's top pass rusher, helped block for the NFL's third-best rushing offense last season.

In his first season with the Jets, 6'7", 318-pound RT Breno Giacomini started all 16 games for the second time in his career. "Giacomini's the starter but, like I said, we're rotating guys all over the place," said Jets head coach Todd Bowles.

A first-round pick of the Seahawks in 2011, James Carpenter joined the Jets after making 44 starts for the 'Hawks the past four years. Last season, the 6'5", 320-pound Carpenter started 13 regular season games and three postseason contests at LG for the Seahawks. A mauler, Carpenter will line up at LG with the starters in training camp. "James is a heck of a player. He's got all the physical skills," said C Nick Mangold. "It's neat seeing his perspective coming in."

There are many candidates to be the starter at right guard. "Obviously it's going to be a competition battle," said veteran OL Willie Colon. "It's me Oday (Aboushi), Brian (Winters) and Brent (Qvale) competing for the right guard spot."

Veteran Willie Colon, who has started all 32 games he has appeared in the past two seasons, didn't take many team reps this spring while working through a knee injury. He promises to be ready to go for camp. "Football is with a helmet and pads in the trenches, battling against the guy in front of you and that all happens this summer," Colon said.

At mandatory minicamp, both Brian Winters and Brent Qvale worked with the first team at RG. Oday Aboushi, who replaced Winters in the starting lineup last year when the latter went down with a knee injury, started 10 games at LG in 2014. Aboushi received first team reps at RG during OTAs. Qvale, a first year player from Nebraska, lined up all over the place this spring. "It was nice to rotate positions a lot from right guard, right tackle, to left tackle. So I'm trying to give my best and be out there wherever I can help," he said.

The Green & White re-signed swing tackle Ben Ijalana and added veterans James Brewer and Charles Brown to the mix as well. C Dalton Freeman & OL Wesley Jonson return while both OL Dakota Dozier, a fourth-rounder in the 2014 draft, and G James Harrison, a fifth-rounder this April, look to impress. Dozier worked a lot at center this spring and his versatility could become an asset there and at guard.
