A lot of green storylines get their start when the Jets take on the Buffalo Bills in both teams' 2019 season opener in sunny MetLife Stadium this afternoon.

QB Sam Darnold won't be one of those new sidebars since he began his Jets and NFL career last season, nor will S Jamal Adams, who got his Jets career rolling in 2017.

But there is much anticipation around Darnold and the Jets offense as they begin their first season being guided by new head coach Adam Gase, making his official debut as the Jets head coach after coaching the Dolphins the previous three seasons.

Who else on the Jets will be introduced as new to the Green & White faithful? Of course on that offense there are RB Le'Veon Bell and C Ryan Kalil —both playing in their first Jets game of any kind since they sat out the preseason — plus WR Jamison Crowder, G Kelechi Osemele and others.

And on defense, besides Adams, the new leader in the middle is MLB C.J. Mosley, nickel CB Brian Poole, first-round rookie DL Quinnen Williams, fifth-round rookie LB/ST Blake Cashman and a host of other recent arrivals courtesy of the hard work of Joe Douglas, the Jets' general manager since May and his front office team.

And the Jets will unveil their fourth kicker in four seasons in second-year man Kaare Vedvik.

On top of all this, the Jets will debut their new Gotham Green jerseys and Spotlight White pants in the regular season. The uniforms, unveiled in New York City in April, got their first game exposure this preseason, with the green jerseys and white pants appearing for the first times in the two home summer games vs. New Orleans and Philadelphia.

Several key Jets contributors who were battling injuries that had them limited in practice this past week are also ready to do battle: WR Robby Anderson (calf), CB Trumaine Johnson (hamstring) and new WR/KR Braxton Berrios (hamstring) were all listed as questionable for the game but all will be in uniform.

The Jets' complete list of seven inactives for today's opener:

  • RB Bilal Powell
  • S Bennett Jackson
  • DL John Franklin-Myers
  • OL Chuma Edoga
  • DL Folorunso Fatukasi
  • DL Nathan Shepherd
  • DL Kyle Phillips

And here are the Bills' inactives, including Andre Roberts, the Jets' Pro Bowl kick returner from last season who was fighting a quadriceps injury this week:

  • WR-KR Andre Roberts
  • S Dean Marlowe
  • S Jaquan Johnson
  • G Ike Boettger
  • T Conor McDermott
  • OL Ryan Bates
  • TE Tyler Kroft

This will be the 13th time that the Jets and Bills, longtime AFL and AFC East rivals, will be opening a season against each other, with the Jets holding an 8-4 lead in the first dozen meetings.

And this is the third time that they'll be doing it at the Jets' home stadium. The other two openers at home were in the very first game in both teams' history and the Jets won both — 27-3 in their first game in franchise history on Sept. 11, 1960 at the Polo Grounds, and the 48-28 shootout at MetLife in 2012.

Today's referee is Clay Martin, who's in his second season as an NFL ref and his fifth as a league official. He has officiated only one other Jets game as referee, last year's loss at Jacksonville.
