The New York Jets have announced that Mike Spina of Floral Park (NY) High School has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, he will receive $1,000 to benefit the school's football program and he will be presented with a certificate from the Jets.
The award, in its 18th year, is given to a coach in the tristate area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes.
Spina is in his 19th season as head coach of the Knights. He served as an assistant coach on the Locust Valley High School football team that won three straight Long Island Conference IV championships from 1985–87. During his playing days, Mike was an all-county as a junior safety and a senior quarterback for his Section 1 bowl championship team at Nanuet High School. Spina went on to earn his bachelor's in physical education from C.W. Post and his master's in health education from Adelphi. Coach Spina is also a physical education teacher and head coach of the varsity baseball and varsity girls' basketball teams at Floral Park. On Saturday, the No. 6 seed Knights came from behind to defeat the No. 3 seed Lynbrook Owls, 21-17, in the Nassau Conference III quarterfinals. They advance to the semifinals to face the No. 1 seed Plainedge Red Devils on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Hofstra University.
