◊ Brian Smith enters his eighth season with the Jets and second as assistant defensive backs coach.

◊ In his first season as assistant defensive backs coach, he helped defensive backs coach Tim McDonald in the development of first-round rookie cornerback Dee Milliner and second-year safety Antonio Allen. Milliner garnered Defensive Rookie of the Month honors after finishing De­cember with 27 tackles, three interceptions and 13 passes defended, while Allen appeared in all 16 games, making nine starts and finishing with 69 tackles, one sack, one interception and six passes defensed, the most of any Jets safety.

◊ Smith originally joined the Jets in 2007 as a quality control/offense coach after seven seasons with the University of Massachusetts, where he was an assistant coach for three years. He coached the wide receivers his last two seasons at Massachusetts, working with future NFL Pro Bowler Victor Cruz. Smith joined the UMass staff in 2004 as the club’s outside linebackers coach.
