Anthony Lynn
Assistant Head Coach/Running Backs

COACHING CAREER

Now in his sixth season with the Jets, Anthony Lynn continues to oversee the team’s running backs after adding the title of assistant head coach last season.

Since his hiring in 2009, Lynn’s runners have gained 136.0 yards per game, the third best average in the NFL, trailing the Chiefs and Vikings by less than half-a-yard. In four of his five years, Lynn has guided a back to a career high in yards: CHRIS IVORY (833 in 2013), Shonn Greene (1,054 in 2011 and 1,062 in 2012) and Thomas Jones (1,402 in 2009).

Last season, Lynn split time between two primary running backs, BILAL POWELL and IVORY, who were separated by only six carries, the fewest carries separating the top two runners since 1991 when Blair Thomas (189) and Brad Baxter (184) were separated by five.

After IVORY was acquired in a draft-day trade this offseason, Lynn helped the fourth-year pro establish a team-leading 833 yards on 182 carries (4.6 average). IVORY’s 2.69 yards after contact per attempt ranked third among all runners with at least 100 carries last season. POWELL, who gained 697 yards on 176 carries, also finishing tied for second on the team with 36 receptions.

The 1,530 combined rushing yards by IVORY and POWELL were the most by the Jets top two runners since LaDainian Tomlinson (914) and Shonn Greene (766) combined for 1,680 yards in 2010.

He also successfully integrated rookie fullback TOMMY BOHANON who gained 62 yards on 17 carries and 69 yards on 11 receptions.

Lynn came to the Jets after spending the previous six years as a running backs coach with the Browns (2007-08), Cowboys (2005-06) and Jaguars (2003-04).

With the Browns, he worked with Jamal Lewis and helped him produce back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. In 2007, Lewis rushed for 1,304 yards despite only playing in 14 games.

He oversaw the emergence of Julius Jones and Marion Barber III as the two combined for over 1,500 yards on the ground both seasons during his time with the Cowboys.

With the Jaguars, Fred Taylor recorded two of the top four rushing seasons in team history, including his career-best 1,572 yards in 2003.

He began his coaching career with the Broncos as an offensive assistant and assistant special teams coach.

PLAYING CAREER

Lynn entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Giants in 1992 but was released after training camp.

He made the 1993 Broncos roster and saw action in 13 games but spent 1994 on IR after breaking his leg.

Lynn spent the 1995-96 seasons with the 49ers before three seasons with the Broncos as an H-back, winning back-to-back Super Bowl championships (XXXII, XXXIII).

He ran for 1,911 yards and 17 touchdowns on 481 carries at Texas Tech, earning All-SWC honors.

OFF THE FIELD

Lynn's two kids are D'Anton, his son, and Danielle, his daughter. The Jets signed D'Anton, a DB out of Penn State, as an undrafted free agent (05/04/12), and he spent time with the scouting department in 2013. Lynn's wife, Stacey Bell Lynn, is a News 12 anchor in Long Island, NY.
