Sam Gash was named the Jets' assistant running backs and assistant special teams coach on March 4, 2005. In the newly created position, Gash will work closely with both Dick Curl, the Jets. Assistant to the Head Coach/Running Backs Coach and Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator Mike Westhoff. Gash enters the coaching profession following a 12-year NFL playing career with the New England Patriots (1992-1997), Buffalo Bills (1998-1999, 2003), Baltimore Ravens (2000-2002). As a player Gash earned the reputation of one of the most physical fullbacks in the league and was named to the Pro Bowl (1998-1999) on two separate occasions . earned a Super Bowl ring as the starting fullback for the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXV. Gash broke into the league in 1992 as an eighth-round draft choice of the Patriots following a productive collegiate career under Joe Paterno at Penn State University. Started 78 of 177 regular-season games and also appeared in 11 postseason games throughout his career with seven starts . earned the distinction of becoming the first back ever selected to the Pro Bowl without recording a rushing attempt in 1999. For his career, he carried the ball 121 times for 327 yards for a 2.7 average with two touchdowns and added 169 receptions for 1,347 yards for an 8.0 average and 13 scores with the Jets, Gash will reunited with Jets. Gash owns the distinction of having never lost a fumble in his 12 seasons . signed with the New Orleans Saints during the 2004 off-season, but was released on the first day of training camp and sat out during the 2004 season . on special teams Gash was active on various different protection units and coverage units throughout his career . played for head coaches Bill Parcells, Pete Carroll, Wade Phillips, Brian Billick and Gregg Williams throughout his NFL playing tenure . as a collegian, Gash was Penn State.s top fullback as a junior and senior . served as offensive captain as a senior and had a career-high 391 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 87 carries . started every game as a junior and posted 315 yards and five scores in 95 carries .. Received a medical redshirt in 1989 due to a fractured fibula. Was PSU's goal-line specialist as a sophomore, scoring seven times inside the 10-yard line earned the nickname "Smash" as a player. Was an Adidas All-America selection and earned All-State honors at Hendersonville H.S. in NC . finished his prep career with 4,739 yards and 72 touchdowns. His older brother, Eric, played for the Washington Redskins in 1992 .
