■ Henry Ellard joins the Jets after eight seasons as an offensive assistant (2001-02) and then wide receivers coach (2003-08) with the St. Louis Rams. Under Ellard’s tutelage, the Rams’ Torry Holt posted seven consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons and reached 11,000 career yards in 131 games, faster than any other player in NFL history.
■ He coached at his alma mater, Fresno State, in 2000.
■ He began his football coaching career an assistant coach at Southern California Christian High School in 1999.
PLAYING CAREER
■ Ellard, a second-round draft choice (32nd overall) of the Los Angeles Rams in 1983, finished his 16-season NFL career with 814 receptions for 13,777 yards and 65 touchdowns for the Rams, Redskins and Patriots.
■ He is eighth all-time in receiving yards and is tied for 19th in NFL history in receptions (with Keyshawn Johnson).
■ He is a three-time Pro Bowler who led the NFC in punt return average in 1984 (13.4) and 1985 (13.5) and led the NFL with two punt return touchdowns in 1984.
■ In 1988 he led the NFC in receptions (86), and led the NFL in receiving yards (1,414).
■ Ellard played from 1979-82 at Fresno State, where he set a then-NCAA record with 1,510 receiving yards (62 receptions, 24.4 yards per catch) in his final season and won conference Player of the Year.
■ He still holds the Fresno State record for receiving touchdowns, (25, tied with Bernard Berrian and Charlie Jones), touchdown receptions in a season (15 in 1982), consecutive games with a touchdown catch (eight in 1982) and consecutive games with a reception (34). He is fourth in career receiving yards (2,947) and all-purpose yards (4,152) and eighth in receptions (138).
OFF THE FIELD
■ Ellard competed in football and track at Hoover HS in his hometown of Fresno, CA.
■ He and his wife, Lillian, have four daughters, Christiana, Alexandria, Adriana and Whitney, and a son, Henry Austin Jr.
■ While with the Rams in 1992, Ellard qualified for the Olympic trials in the triple jump with a high mark of 54’3½”.
■ He was an assistant track and field coach at Villa Park (CA) High in 1999-2000.
