■ Brian Smith begins his first season as quality control coach on defense after two seasons on the offensive side of the ball for the Jets.
■ He joined the Jets after seven seasons with the University of Massachusetts, where he was an assistant coach for three years, coaching the wide receivers for two seasons (2005-06) after working with the linebackers in 2004.
PLAYING CAREER
■ Smith played for the Minutemen from 1997-2000 and was a three-year starter at SS and CB. His career totals include 306 total tackles, 214 solo tackles, 23 tackles for loss, eight interceptions and 23 pass breakups.
■ As a senior he was team captain and All-Atlantic 10, All-New England and All-ECAC.
■ He was a three-time Academic All-Atlantic 10 and Academic All-District selection and was named to the Division I-AA Athletic Directors Academic All-Star team twice.
■ He was a starter on the 1998 Minutemen team that won the national championship.

■ Smith is a native of Wilmington, DE.
■ He graduated cum laude from UMass in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in accounting.
