One of the most pleasant surprises for Weeb Ewbank and his staff last season was the performance of Clyde Washington in the defensive backfield. Washington had played for two seasons with the Boston Patriots and retired at the end of the 1961 campaign to devote more time to his teaching career. But after a year on the sidelines, Washington wrote to Ewbank for a tryout. He was sufficiently impressive during the tryout to earn a spot on the club and quickly became a regular in the secondary. By season's end he was one of the club's best defenders and was named to the second all-AFL team by the Newspaper Enterprise Association. A halfback while in college at Purdue, Clyde also played baseball and batted .316 as a senior. In high school, Washington was a top-notch basketball player and still works as an official in the sport during the off-season. He set a school record with 750 points in his senior season in high school. Still single, the 26-year-old Washington lives in Carlisle, Pa.
