College: A fast (4.5in 40), elusive runner who didn't get a lot of exposure at Nevada-Las Vegas ... could be a "sleeper," according to Walt Michaels ... carried just 22 times for 69 yards as a senior when he played only against non-Western Athletic Conference teams ... a transfer from Santa Rosa JC in California, Batton did not have enough credits for eligibility under WAC rules although he did meet UNLV standards ... even though UNLV had not been officially voted into the WAC for the 1979 season, the Rebels didn't want to jeopardize their chances and kept Batton out of games against future WAC opponents ... scouts say he can do everything you want from a back ... has strength to run inside, speed to get outside and ability to bock and play for special teams ... reminded UNLV coaches of Mike Thomas, now with CHargers ... gained 346 yards in 74 attempts(4.7 avg) and 3 TDs as a junior, including a 46-yard spurt ... caught 7 for 121 yards, including 78-yard TD vs. Colorado State ... also ran track at UNLV with a best of 10.7 in 100 meters and 21.2 in 200 ... has "big play" capabilities ... was MVP at Santa Rosa in 1976 and all-conference in 1977.
