Veteran tight end Dee Mackey was signed as a free agent at the start of 1963 season and his presence was of great benefit to the Jets when rookie Gene Heeter was hurt. Mackey took over the right end spot halfway through the season and finished the year with 23 receptions for 263 yards and three touchdowns. He came to New York after stints with the San Francisco 4gers and Baltimore Colts of the NFL. His biggest thrill in sports thus far came when he helped the 4gers beat the Colts in 1960 to pre- vent Weeb Ewbank's Baltimore club from taking a third straight NFL western division crown. The 29-year-old Mackey is a graduate of East Texas State and played in 1958 Tangerine Ball before beginning his pro career. He is one of two Jets living in Gladewater, Texas (the other is tackle Winston Hill). Gene and his wife Barbara have two sons and a daughter.
