Although Atkins gained stature as an All-American fullback at
Auburn, he has carved his niche as a defensive back in the
professional ranks. He is a student of defense and works hard
at mastering his position. Atkins was one of the key defenders
for New York last season as he pilfered four enemy passes to
rank second on the club in that department. Billy moves well and
offers good protection. He was first drafted by the San Francisco 4gers and was with
them in 1958 and 1959. The following two years he was a member of the Buffalo Bills
before New York secured him in 1962. Atkins set an all-time single season scoring
record at Auburn with 82 points. Nicknamed "Ace."
