Wide receiver Laveranues Coles led the Jets in both catches (9) and receiving yards (111) Sunday. His fourth touchdown of the season came in the third quarter, ending a 91-yard march. Even though Coles accounted for the Jets' first score of the game, he didn't want any credit for the victory. Instead, he chose to praise his quarterback and a fellow receiver.
“It was just one pass; it's a touchdown. I’m excited, but the guys who made the plays today are Chad and Jerricho (Cotchery) - they did an excellent job,” said Coles. “Jerricho made tremendous catches all game. It is just exciting to watch them go out and continue to make plays week-in and week-out.”

New York Jets WR Laveranues Coles
On Chad Pennington and the passing game…
I think he came out and did an excellent job for us today, distributing the ball around and giving guys the opportunity to make plays. He made plays; he used his legs, moved around, found people and got people open. I think that’s one of the most important things for us. As Chad goes, we go, and I’m just very excited for him, that he had a very productive day.
On Chad going down…
I’m a friend of his on and off the field. Any time you have a guy that you truly care about and love outside of football go down, first thing you try to find out is if he okay. I just try to do what anyone would do and check on him, see how well he’s doing. Once he told me it was his wind, I was like “okay.” He had me kind of scared for a second, to be honest, I was worried about him.
On the touchdown…
It was just one pass. It’s a touchdown. I’m excited, but the guys who made the plays today are Chad and Jerricho (Cotchery), they did an excellent job. Jerricho made tremendous catches all game. It’s just exciting to watch them go out and continue to make plays week-in and week-out.
On the 91-yard drive…
You have to give credit to the quarterback and our coordinator. He put a lot of trust and belief in us at the wideout position to go out and be able to make some plays, and that’s what it was. He let it all hang out and put the ball in our hands, and Chad gave us the chance to make plays. Jerricho had an exciting game across the board. [Tim Dwight] had some clutch catches, and so did Justin McCareins. Any time you have a group of guys that just go out, and the coaches put belief in them, in giving them a chance, and them taking advantage of it, you can’t help but have something positive come out of it.
On the audible call for touchdown…
Yeah, it was originally a running play. It was just one of those things where I don’t usually get singled off and when we do, Chad has the option to give me the signal, telling me to run a fade route, and he gave me that signal.
On Chad getting up…
I wasn’t thinking about the crowd. It was a sigh of relief for me, actually. One of those things that I was a little nervous about, but as long as he was okay, that’s the most important thing – that he’s fine. He’s up, and he had an excellent game.
New York Jets’ K Mike Nugent
On his overall season…
To be honest, I’m very lucky. People ask me all the time, “What are your teammates like, what are your coaches like?” Even though I had that Tennessee game, I’m glad we got the win and my teammates are so supportive it’s unbelievable. No matter what kind of day anyone has, we constantly support each other, no matter what happens on a given day. That’s my favorite part about it. Every day I go to practice, or go to a game, I get to be with people that I want to be with.
On how the decision was made to go for the 54-yard kick…
I’m not sure how the coaching decision was going on, but I was unbelievably confident in myself. I was thinking, “If I can show them that I have confidence in myself, maybe the coaches would have the confidence as well.” But I’m not really sure how the decision went, in that point of view, but I was thinking, “Let’s go.”
On if his confidence gives coach Mangini more confidence…
I think so, and I think it starts in practice. If you can show it in practice, he will have confidence in you, and I had a good week of practice.
New York Jets’ WR Jerricho Cotchery
On Chad Pennington…
Any player that has any kind of pride, when he has a game that he feels he didn’t play his best in, all week he can’t wait to get back on the field. You can see that with him. Throughout the entire week, he was preparing hard, he was constantly talking to me and Laveranues Coles about things he wanted to do in the game. Each and every day, he prepared like it was game day, so I knew he was going to be very focused for this game.
On if he knew Pennington was going to have a good game…
I felt it coming. I knew after last week, that he was going to be ready to come back this week and do some good things, because he always bounces back.
New York Jets’ DE Bryan Thomas
On disguising looks…
That’s always good, because if you’re playing a certain coverage and the quarterback can read it, he’s going to pick you apart. It’s like a chess match, so you’re doing this or you’re doing that and the quarterback takes it, it’s a chess match.
New York Jets S Kerry Rhodes
On his interception…
We knew that they wanted to come out that series and run play action. They were trying the run but couldn’t get anything going so I looked back and saw what he (Carr) was doing. I saw Andre (Johnson) running a come back and I just ran up under it and he threw it. I was like ‘Thanks!!’.
On the importance of the defense playing well without blitzing…
We just wanted to come out and play sound (defense) anyway. We didn’t blitz that much, they didn’t give us a chance to. They threw the ball quick and got it out. We were able to be sound in coverage and sound in our drops. Everyone played well. They got yards in the end but they were insignificant.
On containing Houston’s receivers…
It was a combination of everything. We got a lot of pressure with the front four and without blitzing a lot. They did a good job which helps us out in the secondary. It helps a lot, the linebacker’s jobs were pretty good, and it was just a collective team effort.
On his interception…
When I came down, once he faked it, I knew where his read was and Andre Johnson ran a deep comeback and I was able to get right in that window and he threw it right when I was getting there. It was a good play for us. The funny thing about that play was I was telling the defense that we need an interception or turnover, so we got it and I was the guy to get it, so it was good.
