“If you can’t take it, don’t play. It’s a hard game,” says Joe Namath in his new autobiography titled Namath.
Few people better understand the meaning of hard work than he does.
The son of immigrant parents who worked tirelessly to ensure that their children had the opportunities that they were not afforded, with the help of his family, Namath turned his passion for sport into one of the most prolific football careers in American history.
Of the lessons he learned at a young age from his parents and siblings, Namath says, “Actions speak louder than any words you can say. I believe our actions mirror our makeup. So I was taught to obey and be humble. And I learned to be gracious and thick-skinned when it came to matters of winning and losing.”
Namath is an insightful, colorful story that traces Broadway Joe’s trajectory from his childhood ambitions to his days at the University of Alabama to his career with the New York Jets and its aftermath.
Of his first days as a New Yorker, Namath recounts, “I was the appetizer, entrée and dessert all rolled into one for New York’s mischievous media – its sportswriters, three television reporters, radio guys, and general sporting crowd.”
