Jets Make Final Cuts to Get to 53

Posted Aug 30, 2014

QBs Matt Simms & Tajh Boyd, CB Dimitri Patterson, WR Stephen Hill Among 21 Released

The Jets reduced their roster to the NFL's 53-player limit today with the release of 21 players, including quarterbacks Matt Simms, last year's backup to Geno Smith, and sixth-round rookie Tajh Boyd.

Thus the Green & White are heading toward their Sept. 7 season opener against the Raiders with Smith as the starter and Michael Vick as his only backup.

The team also released veteran CB Dimitri Patterson, who had unexcused absences from the Giants game and the following Sunday practice, and three other former draft choices — WR Stephen Hill, their second-round draft choice in 2012; G Will Campbell from the '13 draft, and CB Brandon Dixon from this year's draft.

LB Antwan Barnes was move No. 22 to get the roster to 53. Barnes, who continues to improve as he rehabs his knee, was placed on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform.

The releases of Hill, Patterson, Boyd, Daryl Richardson, Alex Green, Chris Pantale, Brent Qvale, Tevita Finau, Zach Thompson, A.J. Edds, Rontez Miles and Johnny Patrick were confirmed earlier today on the Jets' Twitter page.

The complete list of today's player moves:

QB — Tajh Boyd, Matt Simms

Simms played in three games behind Smith last year. He QB'd 17 drives this preseason, producing one touchdown, one field goal and 10 punts. Boyd, the fourth of four sixth-rounders, led nine drives in two games, with one TD and seven punts.

RB — Alex Green, Daryl Richardson

Richardson, a third-year back, was acquired on waivers from St. Louis in May. He led the Jets with 31 carries this preseason, gaining 95 yards for a 3.1-yard average, and added three catches for 58 yards.

Green, in his fourth season, was acquired on waivers from Green Bay last year and played in 13 games. This summer he had 74 yards on 24 carries (3.1 avg.) and 10 yards on three receptions.

WR — Clyde Gates, Stephen Hill

Hill, the 43rd pick overall out of Georgia Tech in 2012, battled injuries and inconsistency in his first two Jets seasons, during which he had 45 catches for 594 yards (13.2 avg.) and four touchdowns in 23 games (19 starts). This preseason he had three catches for 42 yards.

Gates arrived on waivers from Miami early in 2012 and had 28 catches for 346 yards (12.4 avg.) and no TDs for the Green & White. This year he led the team with two TD catches, the last one a 42-yarder coming on a deflection off a Philadelphia DB on Thursday night.

TE — Chris Pantale

Pantale was signed after the '13 draft. He was on the active roster five weeks last year but was deactivated each time. This preseason he had three catches for 74 yards, all against the Eagles.

OL — Will Campbell, Brent Qvale, Caleb Schlauderaff

Schlauderaff came to the Jets via a trade after final cuts in 2011. He played in 12 games (one start as a third  TE) in three seasons, and this summer was in for 59 plays.

Campbell was last year's sixth-round pick out of Michigan. A defensive lineman converted to guard, he was inactive for all 16 games last season. This summer he was in for 55 plays, including six snaps on the DL at Philadelphia.

Qvale, out of Nebraska, signed after the May draft. He was in for 89 plays this preseason, including 61 against the Eagles.

DL — Tevita Finau, Kerry Hyder, Zach Thompson

Finau, who made stops with Philadelphia and Dallas in 2012, was a reserve/future signing on Dec. 31, 2012, and was in his second Jets camp. He had a sack against the Bengals and was on the field for 118 plays this preseason.

Hyder was an undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech who was in for 99 plays this preseason. Thompson was also an undrafted rookie free agent, out of Wake Forest, who got 60 reps this summer.

LB — Troy Davis, A.J. Edds, Garrett McIntyre, Antwan Barnes (Reserve/PUP)

McIntyre, who began his career with three short NFL stops and two seasons each in the Arena League and the CFL, stuck with the Jets in 2011. He was a backup LB and special teams contributor who had 5.5 sacks in his 42 games (10 starts) from 2011-13. He also split a sack at Cincinnati earlier this month.

Edds was in his fourth NFL season after signing off a tryout at our rookie minicamp in May. He recovered the fumble that secured the 13-10 win over Indianapolis in the preseason opener, had 19 tackles and led the team with 236 snaps in the four preseason games. Davis signed after last year's draft and played in four games before going on IR. He played in 49 plays in the first three preseason games.

Barnes, in his second year with the team, "has made significant strides, let's just say that," head coach Rex Ryan said on a Friday conference call. Barnes could begin practicing Oct. 14 with the possibility of being activated in the three weeks after that.

DB — Brandon Dixon, Rontez Miles, Johnny Patrick, Dimitri Patterson, Jeremy Reeves

Patterson, the ninth-year pro, came to Jets from the Dolphins as a free agent and was in line to start at one of the corner spots until leg injuries and his missing the Giants game and the next practice came into play.

Miles, who signed after the '13 draft, was active for one game last year, against New Orleans, and spent the rest of the season on the practice squad. He played 134 plays this summer.

Dixon, out of Northwest Missouri State, was the first of our four sixth-rounders. He played in all four preseason games, getting 116 snaps. Patrick was acquired on waivers from San Diego in March after playing three seasons for the Saints and Chargers combined. He had 119 plays this summer. Reeves was a first-year free agent signed after a superb pro day at Iowa State. He had 37 plays in three games.
