Jets fans had no reason to know the name in 2011, but NFL Combine and Draft followers paid special attention to the quietly confident 5'9" corner from Tennessee–Chattanooga who tore up three of the less celebrated drills.

Buster Skrine ran the 20-yard shuttle in 3.90 seconds. He tied Shiloh Keo of Idaho for the fastest time among DBs that year and is tied for sixth-fastest among DBs in the last 10 Combines.

The 60 shuttle — consisting of legs of 5, 5, 10, 10, 15 and 15 yards — was even better for Buster, who powered to a 10.75-second time that was first among all Combine participants that year and is tied for second overall in the last 10 Combines.

Then Skrine unfurled a masterful three-cone drill in 6.44 seconds, just a tick off of the 6.42 turned in by Oregon's Jeff Maehl that same year. And Maehl and Skrine are still 1-2 in that event for all Combine participants in the last 10 years.

His Combine showing (he also had 20 reps in the bench press and had a 40 range from 4.29 to 4.48 seconds) solidified his status as Cleveland's fifth-round pick (137th overall) in the '11 draft. Four years later his physical conditioning and his experience gained with the Browns led the Jets to bring him in as an unrestricted free agent a year ago.

In August, head coach Todd Bowles said Skrine "is one of the hardest-working guys out there," and in December DC Kacy Rodgers observed, "He's pound for pound one of the strongest guys on the team."
