Jeff Cumberland Agrees to Terms with Jets

Posted Mar 8, 2014

TE Led Green & White in TDs, Had Career High in Receiving Yards in ’13

Tight end Jeff Cumberland has agreed to terms on a new contract.

Cumberland, who could have become an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday, agreed to the new deal after coming off of a productive fourth season with the Jets.

His 398 receiving yards were a career high, coming on 26 receptions. And his four touchdowns were not only a career high but also the team-leading figure for Geno Smith and the offense. He put up TD catches in four road games — at Tennessee, Atlanta, Buffalo and Carolina. He also had a career-long 47-yard catch-and-run in the primetime triumph over the Falcons.

Cumberland has 13 "big plays" — receptions of 20-plus yards — in the past two seasons combined, second on the Jets only to WR Jeremy Kerley's 21 plays. His seven 20 plays last season helped him pack an average of 15.3 yards/catch, which was the third-highest average among NFL tight ends with at least 25 receptions.

The one-time Illinois wide receiver signed with us as an undrafted free agent in 2010. For his Green & White career, Cumberland has played in 34 games (24 starts, all in the past two seasons) and has 58 receptions for 795 yards (13.7 yards/catch) and seven TDs.
