Coordinators' Corner, Pre-Giants Edition

Posted Aug 21, 2014

Coaches Mornhinweg, Thurman & McGaughey Talk with Reporters

The Jets' three coordinators talked with reporters on Wednesday afternoon about a variety of subjects.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg was quizzed about the quarterback competition between Geno Smith and Michael Vick. Defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman talked about the situation in his secondary and having fun coaching first-round S Calvin Pryor. And special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey fielded questions on punting competition and who might fill in if rookie PR Jalen Saunders misses time at the start of the regular season.

Here are Q&A excerpts from each coach along with video of his news conference with reporters.

OC Marty Mornhinweg on if it's been "frustrating" coaching WR Stephen Hill through his injury stops and starts...

As a coach I don’t even like the word because we’re teachers by nature. We teach, correct, reteach it if we need to and correct it and it goes on forever because you get new players, you get young players in. We’re just looking for him to continue to progress and he has had a fine camp. Now look, there’s been some ups and downs there, certainly for all of us, but he’s been impressive. Now we’re looking for that consistency.

DC Dennis Thurman on NFL officials' new emphasis this season on calling penalties on defensive players down the field...

You can't worry about it. It's a rule. So it's not something that we're sitting around having a pity party about. If you're a quality defensive back and you understand how you have to play, then it's all about your eyes and your feet. ... In terms of playing the receiver, you've got 5 yards to put your hands on him. After 5 yards it's my ability to watch him and simulate his movement. If I can do that, I can cover in the National Football League. That's what we're teaching. We're not worried about the rule. If we do it the way we're taught, well be OK.

STC Thomas McGaughey on which rookies have stood out on special teams this preseason...

They’re all working hard. You saw last week with IK [Enemkpali] and Trevor [Reilly]. I mean those two guys have really done a nice job. But they’re all working hard, all those young guys, Q [Quincy Enunwa], they’re all working hard. You see all of them making strides and that’s all you can ask for. So guys are working hard every day and making those professional strides for our football team.
