SNY Report: Garrard to Retire?

Posted May 15, 2013

The Jets are committed to have an open competition for the starting quarterback position.  But SportsNet New York’s Adam Schein is reporting that the Green & White may have to start OTAs with four quarterbacks instead of five.

Twitter was abuzz this afternoon when @AdamSchein typed the following: Text from Garrard: "Having to call it quits. My knee is not holding up. Continuing to swell after practices. Limiting what I can do."

The 35-year-old Garrard, who missed the 2011 and 2012 seasons following back and knee surgeries respectively, was excited for a chance to start with his new team.

“I just want to show what I can do what I can do,” he said during a recent open locker room session.  “And what I can do — I know has been pretty good in the past.  Hopefully I can be back at that same level and stay healthy.  With that I just want to leave the chips out there.  If they like, they like it.  If they don’t, they don’t.”

If Garrard does indeed walk away, Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms will battle it out.  The Jets have not commented publicly on today’s report.  We hope to have more on this report and much more on Thursday’s “Jets Talk LIVE” installment that is scheduled to kickoff at 3:00 p.m.
