 “I want to see what he can do. We all know the tangibles he has. He’s a winner,” said offensive coordinator Tony Sparano of McElroy.  “He’s been a winner his whole life. He’s won a National Championship, won a state championship. His whole resume speaks about him obviously being a very confident guy and a confident leader.”

The Jets will close out their home slate in Week 16, trying to reach .500 at the Met after registering a 6-2 mark as a host in 2011.  Way back on Sep. 9, New York’s AFC representative kicked off 2012 in front of Jets Nation with a 48-28 rout of the Buffalo Bills.   Mark Sanchez completed 70 percent of his passes with 3 TDs and the Jets forced four turnovers on a beautiful afternoon.

But as the Jets approach the final two games of the season, Sanchez will at best be relegated to backup duty against the Bolts.  And the Jets two top receivers in Week 1 — rookie Stephen Hill (5-89-2TD) and Santonio Holmes (4-68) — are both on injured reserve.  It is also likely TE Dustin Keller (ankle) will likely miss his seventh game of the season, but McElroy is prepared for the challenge.

“He’s definitely a student of the game. He’s got that gym-rat mentality,” said defensive coordinator Mike Pettine of the 2nd-year passer from Alabama.  “He’s very analytical. He gives us a lot of feedback on things. He would do it on a certain route or against a certain blitz or how he would I.D. a certain front of ours or thing that we were doing. There’s definitely some give-and-take there. He was helpful.”
