Jets at Bengals: Halftime Report

Posted Aug 16, 2014

Jets Trail by 1: After Geno Smith scored late in the second stanza on a zone read, the Jets elected to go for two. Good move in the preseason, but Smith’s pass to TE Zach Sudfeld fell incomplete. Minus a miscommunication with WR David Nelson, Smith had a solid half. He frequently looked DBs off while completing 10 of 13 for 98 yards and No. 7 added 21 yards on three rush attempts.

Too Much Laundry: The Jets had eight penalties in the first half for 95 yards and many of those were of the 15-yard variety.

Pryor Punches First: It didn’t take the rookie safety long to make an impact.  Sent on a blitz, Calvin Pryor was beat to QB Matt Scott by Demario Davis, but the Louisville product recovered a fumble on the strip-sack at the Cincy 19-yard-line.  Four plays later, the Jets closed the gap at 17-10 when Bilal Powell scored from two yards out.

CJ & Powell Effective on the Ground: With Chris Ivory (ribs) out of the lineup, Chris Johnson had a busy first half and the explosive back got to the edge on occasion.  CJ, who has repeatedly said his knee feels great after offseason surgery, loves the work.  He rushed 10 times for 54 yards and also had a pair of receptions.  Powell had a 32-yard scamper late that set the Jets up deep inside enemy territory.

Slow Start: The Jets wanted to get a positive vibe going early, but they endured another nightmarish first quarter in the Jungle.  The Bengals jumped out to a 14-3 lead as Andy Dalton — much like he did in last October’s 49-9 rout — came out red hot.  Wideout A.J. Green had three receptions for 69 yards in the first quarter and two of the catches were backbreakers.  Working from the inside on a third down, Green got free for 21 yards. That set up the first score and then Green got the Bengals going again, beating Antonio Allen off the line and hauling in a 35-yard grab.  Down 14-3, Geno Smith and David Nelson weren’t on the same page and corner Terrence Newan intercepted in Jets’ territory.

Host of Lineup Changes: With Eric Decker (quad) out, the Jets started David Nelson and Stephen Hill at wide receiver.  After Brian Winters played very well last week against the Colts, the Jets gave Oday Aboushi the nod at LG.  Following their practice script, the Jets started Antonio Allen and Ellis Lankster outside at corner. And Jaiquawn Jarrett took AA’s place at safety alongside Dawan Landry.

Jets Inactives:  The following players were held out of Saturday’s contest: WR-PR Jalen Saunders (car accident on FRI), CB Dimitri Patterson (calf/quad), CB Dee Milliner (ankle), RB Chris Ivory (ribs), CB Dexter McDougle (torn ACL), T Markus Zucevics (knee), WR Shaq Evans (shoulder), TE Jeff Cumberland (Achilles) & WR Eric Decker (quad).
