Eighth-Year Signalcaller Joins Ryan Fitzpatrick, Injured Geno Smith, Rookies Bryce Petty & Jake Heaps

The Jets  today have signed eighth-year free agent quarterback Matt Flynn and have added him to their QB depth chart that includes Ryan Fitzpatrick, the injured Geno Smith and rookies Bryce Petty and Jake Heaps.

Flynn, who came to the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center last Friday for a physical, had been released by New England on Aug. 10 after signing with the Patriots on June 11 as an unrestricted free agent.

Flynn was selected by Green Bay in the seventh round (No. 209 overall) of the 2008 draft out of LSU. He played his first four seasons with the Packers, went to Seattle in 2012, split time with Oakland, Buffalo and Green Bay in '13, and remained with the Pack last season.

For his career, he's played in 53 games (seven starts), completed 219 of 357 passes (61.3%) for 2,541 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, has been sacked 39 times, and has an 85.9 passer rating.

General manager Mike Maccagnan was asked in a Tuesday interview with reporters about signing a veteran QB.

"I don’t want to necessarily put a time frame on that, but it is something we are looking to do," Maccagnan said. "Obviously, Geno is going to be out for a period of time. Not to read between the lines on anything with any of our quarterbacks, I think it’s just something we would like to have in the mix and we have the ability to do that potentially for the rest of training camp.

"Anything we can do to make our team better going forward, whether it’s in trades, waiver wire claims or players on the street right now, we’re going to look into those things that would make us a better team."

The Jets also waived WR Arthur Williams, who was signed Aug. 4.

An interesting Green & White note: Flynn and Jets RT Breno Giacomini are now teammates on their third different team. The Packers selected both Flynn and Giacomini in 2008 with picks they received in a draft-day trade with the Minnesota Vikings. And the two were reunited on the Seahawks in '12.
