Jets Sign 2 Tryouts: QB Heaps, FB Copeland

Two Undrafted FA Signees, CB Henderson & S Perkins, Are Released to Make Room on Roster

The Jets have signed two tryout players from the weekend's rookie minicamp, quarterback Jake Heaps and fullback J.C. Copeland. To make room on the 90-man roster, we have released two undrafted free agents signed right after the draft, cornerback Greg Henderson and safety Demarkus Perkins.

Heaps (6'1", 208) came out of Skyline HS in Sammamish, WA with a career 40-2 record and 114 touchdown passes to 18 interceptions as the top-rated QB prospect in the country by several recruiting services.

He played his first two seasons at BYU, then transferred to Kansas and head coach Charlie Weis (the former Jets offensive coordinator). He played at KU one year, transferred to Miami, and played sparingly for the Hurricanes last season (three games, no starts, 6-for-12 passing, 51 yards).

Heaps joins the QB depth chart that includes Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Simms and fourth-round QB Bryce Petty.

Copeland (5'11", 260) was signed as an undrafted free agent by Dallas last year but was cut by the Cowboys in late August. He played four seasons at LSU, the last three as a 22-game starter, and was considered as one of the top blocking FBs in college in 2012 and '13. For his career he gained 92 yards on 36 carries (2.6 yards/carry) and scored seven touchdowns — six of them on 1-yard runs — and caught seven passes for 85 yards (12.1 yards/catch).

He was recruited to LSU as a defensive tackle after racking up 27 sacks as a senior DT at Georgia's Troup County HS but switched to fullback shortly after his arrival on campus.

Copeland and third-year man Tommy Bohanon are the FBs on the Jets roster.

Henderson (5'11", 185) had 10 pass breakups and four interceptions as a Colorado junior, 14 PBUs (no INTs) last season, and finished his career third on the Buffs' all-time list with 36 career pass deflections.

Perkins (6'0", 219) had his best of three seasons at FIU last year with two interceptions, one returned for a TD, 67 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.
