Locker Room View: QBs Change Roles

Geno Smith 'Thankful' to Get Start vs. Miami, Michael Vick Supportive of His 'Little Brother'

The big story today was the announcement that QB Geno Smith would be starting under center on Monday night against the Dolphins.

Smith, who was benched after three first-quarter interceptions in Week 8 against the Bills, said he was excited about the chance to be the signalcaller once again.

“I’m just thankful for another opportunity. I’ve been preparing myself to go out there and give us a chance to win,” Smith said at his locker today. “Other than that, it was pretty much maintaining the same preparation and mechanics that I’ve had throughout the weeks and trying to go out there and do my best.”

Smith said the most important thing he can do for the Green & White is to take care of the football against the Dolphins.

“I think that’s what everybody wants to see and that’s what I want to see from myself,” he said. “I want to go out there with that intent. Also, I want to help us score points and get the victory.”

Vick, who had one turnover in his three starts for the Green & White, was supportive of Smith regaining the job as the starting QB.

“I continue to support Geno. Like I said, that’s my little brother. I want him to do well. I want him to succeed and excel,” he said. “I know he’s got it in him. It’s great to see him get another opportunity. I know he got hurt and some things that happened, he had a sour taste in his mouth, so now he gets a chance to go out and make it right.”

Learning from the Sideline

Smith said the biggest benefit of sitting out two full games and most of two others was being able to learn from afar with Vick taking the reps.

“Just learning from the way Mike did things, the way he took care of the ball, how he pulled the ball down and gained some yards with his legs,” Smith said. “Some of the things the coaches were telling me to do, seeing it from the sideline, you get a better perspective sometimes of things. I think I learned a lot from my experience.”

Head coach Rex Ryan agreed with his quarterback’s sentiment, saying he could see Geno processing information from the sideline.

“He hasn’t just been standing back there. He’s been very observant. One week we take a sack and I’m like, ‘We can’t take a sack in this situation. Did you see it?’ Geno said, ‘I see it, Coach, I see it.’ Sometimes when you see it from that position, it has an effect. We hope it has an effect on him.”

Decker Respects the Dolphins' "D"

WR Eric Decker said the Jets have begun to watch video of their AFC East foe, and he said the Dolphins defense stands out.

“We watched a little Miami tape. They’re a good defense — a top-five defense,” Decker said of 'Fins, who in fact are ranked No. 5 this week in yards allowed. “They’ve got some edge rushers that are some of the best in the game, and [Brent] Grimes is a really good cornerback. The safeties are good. All around, they have a good, physical, aggressive team. It’ll be a challenge.”

Ryan said one of the deciding factors in the contest is the battle in the trenches. The O-line, he said, will need to step up in this one.

“Absolutely, it starts up front,” Ryan said of a Dolphins team that has 31 sacks on the season. “If we can’t block them, it doesn’t matter who we have at quarterback.”

Big Mo in Pain

DE Muhammad Wilkerson suffered a toe injury in the second quarter against the Bills and did not return to the game.

Ryan said the extent of the injury is unknown but “it doesn’t look good.” Wilkerson is in a walking boot and did not participate in practice today.

Amaro Also Sidelined

Rookie TE Jace Amaro suffered a head injury against the Bills and is currently in the concussion protocol. He has not been diagnosed with a concussion, according to Ryan.

The Jets are mulling their options in case Amaro is unable to play against the Dolphins. Ryan said bringing up TE Chris Pantale from the practice squad is "a real possibility.”
