The Jets have re-signed DL Xavier Cooper.

He totaled 16 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and four quarterback hits in eight games last season. Cooper played a helping hand in what led to fellow defensive lineman Leonard Williams’ first career interception. In Week 15 against the Saints, the 6’4”, 300-pound Cooper pressured Saints quarterback Drew Brees up the middle and knocked his arm, leading to Williams’ pick.

“I had an instinct for what move I was going to set up on my guy,” Cooper said the following week. "I was setting him up outside and I was like, I'm going to take him inside this play. So I took him inside and I really thought I had the sack, but he threw it away.

“When I got up, I was like, well, that’s better than a sack.”

Originally a third-round pick by the Browns in 2015, Cooper tallied 46 tackles, 2.0 sacks in 32 games in three seasons, two of which came in Cleveland. The fourth-year veteran played with the 49ers for the first five games in 2017 before he was released.

The Washington State product recorded 121 tackles, 31.5 of which were for loss in addition to 13 sacks during his three-year collegiate career.
