Jets Reactions and Storylines from the Home Finale, a 17-16 Loss to New England

#44 TE Zach Sudfeld, #74 C Nick Mangold, #83 TE Chris Pantale, #97 LB Calvin Pace #26 S Dawan Landry.

Mangold on wearing an NYPD hat pregame: "Every one of those guys that’s out there, they risk their lives every day. They go out there to keep the community safe, and for that to happen to those two guys, their families, that’s a raw deal. If wearing that gives them a little bit of comfort or shows support for those folks, I’m happy to do it."

Pass Rush

Babin: “The guys on the back end did a great job disguising what coverage they were in and who was covering who, and it kind of gave us some time to get there.”

The New York Jets defense recorded four sacks of QB Tom Brady by seven different players.  DE Muhammad Wilkerson, LB Demario Davis, S Antonio Allen, LB Quinton Coples, LB David Harris and DL Sheldon Richardson all recorded half sacks while LB Calvin Pace totaled one sack.  The four sacks mark the fourth time this season the Jets recorded at least four in a game, and the second time this season Brady was sacked at least four times (9/7/14 at MIA).

The Jets defense held the Patriots to 52 total net yards in the first half, the fewest by a Jets opponent since MIN had 51 in 2010 (10/11), and the fewest by the Patriots in a first half since 1993 when they had 41 (09/26/93).  Brady’s one touchdown pass snaps a streak of 10 consecutive games with at least two touchdown throws.  The Patriots 231 total yards is a season low, and the lowest total since they registered 213 at PIT (10/30/11).

David Harris

Harris on reaching 1,000 career tackles: “I’ll think about it after the season. I would’ve rather had a win.”

In the first quarter, Harris surpassed 1,000 career tackles when he sacked Brady along with Pace, making him the fourth Jets player to surpass this milestone, joining Mo Lewis, Marvin Jones and Kyle Clifton.  Harris finished the game with a team high 10 total tackles and a half sack. He has 1,008 tackles for his career.

Sheldon Richardson

Sheldon: “People say that’s the best team in the league and we want toe-to-toe with them. Shoulda, could, woulda, but we didn’t.”

Richardson’s half sack in the second half increased his total to a team-high seven sacks.

Jeff Cumberland

Cumberland: “We came out and played hard for four quarters. We just couldn’t pull it out, but I’m glad the way we fought.”

TE Jeff Cumberland caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from QB Geno Smith in the second quarter.  It is Cumberland’s second touchdown catch of the season with his last one also coming against New England (10/16/14).  He finished the game with three receptions for 43 yards.

Marcus Williams

Williams: “I was thinking, ‘Hopefully, we can win the game. Hopefully we can get the offense in a good spot where they can go down and drive it so we can score.’”

CB Marcus Williams registered his first career interception in the fourth quarter against Brady on a pass intended for WR Brandon LaFell.  Williams finished the game with seven total tackles and three passes defensed.
