Smith Recalls Circus Catch

Before ODB Made National Headlines, New Jets WR Shook Up the State of Ohio

Last November, Giants wideout Odell Beckham Jr. made a catch against the Cowboys on Sunday Night football that sent Twitter into overdrive. But Ohio State fans had witnessed a Devin Smith grab vs. Miami (OH) on Sep. 1, 2012 that arguably was just as impressive.

“I was at a friend’s house when I (saw) that and everyone started tweeting me like, ‘Devin did if first. Devin did it first.’ So that kind of reminded me a little bit of what I did,” said Smith of the Beckham snag.

Smith, who was taken with the fifth pick of Round 2 last weekend, was asked Saturday about his sensational 23-yard TD against the Redhawks.

“It was just a simple go route and the guy sat in front of me and Braxton (Miller) threw the ball,” Smith told reporters. “And at first when the ball was in the air, I was like, ‘Oh man, it’s about to go over my head.’ And once it started to get a little bit closer, I was like, ‘Oh maybe I can go it.’ And the only thing I could do was just throw up that one hand and (I) caught it.”

Smith, who averaged 20.7 yards a reception at OSU, scored 30 TDs in 54 career games. He was on the receiving end of a long pass from QB Jake Heaps on Friday and looks forward to working with a Jets WR corps that includes Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker and Jeremy Kerley.

“It makes it a lot easier when you have guys like that that you’re teammates with,” he said. “So they can tell you everything that’s helped them be successful and how to beat press coverage and how to get open. I’m looking forward to just learning from those guys.”

Although Smith can stretch the field and he is also expected to contribute on special teams, he says he is more than just a speed receiver.

“I don’t really worry about it because I know how I good I am. I wouldn’t be here obviously if I couldn’t do anything,” he said.  “I don’t really worry about it and just keep playing my game, just keep doing what I do.  I make plays and just have fun.”
