Jets' Threats: Top 5 Highlights

Posted Dec 10, 2013

Clips from the games that matter to the Green & White and their fans

The Jets did their part on Sunday as they beat the Oakland Raiders and ended their three-game losing skid, advancing to 6-7 on the season. Unfortunately, however, many of our main competitors for that sixth AFC Wild Card spot won their Week 14 matchups as well.

As Senior Reporter Eric Allen mapped out this afternoon, the Jets’ playoff chances are certainly not probable, but they are possible. As Lloyd Christmas once said, “So, you’re telling me there’s a chance!”

5. Saints Brees Past the Panthers

If the Jets defeated the Saints and the Saints beat the Panthers, then that means…

False logic, I know. But Monday Night Football’s matchup showed us that the 9-4 Panthers have some soft spots that we might just be able to exploit in this Sunday’s season-defining game.

Of course, the crowd will be their ally, not ours, and while this 4th-and-17 touchdown strike from the dynamic Cam Newton to the ageless Steve Smith didn’t change the outcome of the game, it does serve as a reminder of the challenges that lie ahead for the Green & White four days from now.

4. Game of Inches

With the Steelers down seven points with three seconds left and 74 yards away from the end zone, the game was all but over. A short completion and a couple laterals later, though, WR Antonio Brown was taking off down the left sideline getting nearer to the end zone with every stride – until one of those strides landed out of bounds.

Miami advanced to 7-6 and jumped over the Jets in the standings, but Pittsburgh is now 5-8 and on the brink of playoff elimination.

3. On Their Mile-High Horse

It was a given that the Tennessee Titans would lose in their game at Denver, until the scoreboard read Home: 10, Visitors: 21 that is.

Clearly the Broncos needed a spark. They got a bonfire. K Matt Prater hit an NFL record 64-yard field goal to end the first half, and QB Peyton Manning and the rest of the Broncos offense took it from there, posting 51 points in all and burying the Titans.

Tennessee’s now in the same position as Pittsburgh as a 5-8 team that holds a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Jets.

2. San Diego's Still Charging

Our cross-conference New York neighbors had a chance to help the Jets out as QB Eli Manning faced the team that drafted him. But the Chargers went up 10-0 on a 43-yard touchdown catch by WR Keenan Allen and never looked back, defeating the Giants 37-14.

At 6-7, San Diego remains a threat, but if the Jets end up at either 8-8 or 9-7, the Chargers will need to lose just once for the Green & White to box them out of a playoff position.

1. 125 Seconds, 5 TDs, 1 Baltimore Win

Despite losing RB Adrian Peterson to a foot injury in the second quarter, the Minnesota Vikings appeared poised to pull off an upset at Baltimore, leading 12-7 late in the fourth. Job well done by both defenses, until…

  • 1-yard receiving touchdown by Dennis Pitta, Ravens lead 15-12, 2:05 left
  • 41-yard rushing touchdown by Toby Gerhart, Vikings lead 19-15, 1:27 left
  • 77-yard kickoff return touchdown by Jacoby Jones, Ravens lead 22-19, 1:16 left
  • 79-yard receiving touchdown by Cordarrelle Patterson, Vikings lead 26-22, 0:45 left
  • 9-yard receiving touchdown by Marlon Brown, Ravens lead, 0:04 left

No, four seconds was not enough time on the clock for the Vikings to come back, even in this crazy finish, and unfortunately for the Jets, Baltimore advanced to 7-6.
