Hispanic Heritage Day Set for Sunday

Posted Sep 26, 2012

The New York Jets announced today details of Hispanic Heritage Day, which will be celebrated at Sunday's game against the 49ers presented by JetBlue. The day is part of a league-wide celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15). Jets Hispanic Heritage Day is presented by JetBlue, ESPN Deportes Nueva York 1050 AM and El Diario.

At the game, the Jets will celebrate Hispanic heritage with a variety of cultural entertainment, performances and activities that reflects the vibrant diversity of New York’s Latino population, the second-largest in the country. The team has selected Shirley Rodríguez Remeneski as the recipient of the NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award, a recognition made possible through the support of Bud Light.

Remenski is the president of 100 Hispanic Women, an organization that provides needed education and career opportunities to Latinas, and the chairperson of Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center’s Board of Trustees. The NFL and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) have partnered to launch the NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Awards Presented by Bud Light during the 2012 celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The award recognizes the contributions of Hispanic leaders in each NFL market.

The Jets Hispanic Heritage Day will feature the National Anthem performed by Lillian Garcia, popular singer, songwriter and WWE personality. Garcia, fluent in both English and Spanish, recorded a duet in both languages with Grammy Award winner Jon Secada. The Latin-born beauty is known to millions of fans as the host of WWE’s “Smackdown.” Garcia also will perform a concert during halftime.

On the plaza pregame, fans can enjoy a cultural celebration from ESPN Deportes Nueva York 1050 AM starting with a performance by Cultural Explosion Dance Company. They will be available for photo opportunities during the broadcast. Fans can also enjoy a DJ, a tripleta sampling, and a sandwich-eating contest at the Puerto Rico Tourism Company food truck. Inside the stadium, fans can enjoy the Item of the Week, cheese arepas. Traditional mariachi band Mariachi Citlalli will be performing in the Jets suite and club spaces.

On Friday, 20 children and teens from The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families Inc. (CHCF) will watch practice at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. After practice, Mark Sanchez will hold a meet-and-greet with the group. Based in the New York City area, the CHCF has reached out to children and families in the Latino community with programs and services that have improved their lives and helped them build a productive future.
