HS Coach of the Week: Kemp Carr, Penns Grove

Posted Nov 7, 2012

The New York Jets have announced that Kemp Carr of Penns Grove (N.J.) High School has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, Carr will receive $1,000 to benefit his school’s football program and he will be presented with a certificate from the Jets.

The award, in its 17th year, is given to coaches in the tristate area who serve the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes.

Carr, in his ninth season as the head coach of the Red Devils, led them to conference championships the past three seasons. In 2008, he coached Penns Grove to a state sectional championship for the first time in school history. The Red Devils led New Jersey in scoring in 2010 and currently lead the state in scoring this season. They've outscored their opponents by 416-26 on the season.

Carr was a Group 1 first-team quarterback at Salem High School. He went on to play cornerback at Montclair State University while earning a degree in exercise science. He later earned his master’s degree in supervisory leadership at the University of Wilmington. He continually learns and implements proper football techniques at D-1 football camps across the nation to instruct his players on how to be safe and successful.

On Friday, Penns Grove defeated the Highland Tartans, 52-0, to improve to 8-0 on the season, extend its scoreless streak to five games with its sixth shutout of the season, and clinch the Diamond Division title and the No. 1 seed in the South Jersey Group 1 playoffs. The Red Devils have a bye this week as they await their next opponent in the playoff quarterfinals.
