The New York Jets announced today that John Power of Hillside High School in Hillside, N.J., has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, Power will receive $1,000 to benefit the school’s football program and he will be presented with a certificate from the Jets.
The award, in its 13th year, is given to a coach in the tristate area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes.
Power is in his first year at the Comets' helm. Prior to Hillside, he was the offensive coordinator at Union High School, helping to lead the squad to four postseason appearances and, in 2003, the Watchung Conference championship.
The former Georgia Bulldogs QB honed his craft as a graduate assistant at Georgia in 1994-95 and then as a program coordinator in 2001. Power graduated with a master of arts in teaching special education from New Jersey City University in 2006 and is a teacher at P.S. 23 in Jersey City, N.J.
Last weekend, the Comets defeated the Cranford Cougars, 28-0, to improve to 3-0 on the season. Up next, Hillside will face the Johnson Crusaders at home on Friday, Oct. 3.
